Bioactive materials, 3D printing, and AI-infused applications are among the modern-day bells and whistles of dentistry. Attention-getting, sleek, and the hit of every dental trade show, they tend to command all the attention. But most general dentists would agree that it’s the more common instruments that earn the title of "practice workhorse." Need an example? Every dentist’s best friend: burs. And, there’s a new bur in town.

Multiple Reasons to Try

Kerr Dental’s SimpliCut is a single-patient-use line of presterilized diamond burs that offers a convenient cutting option for several reasons. First, the burs are ready to use right out of the box. Next, they quickly cut through enamel, resin, porcelain, and zirconia. And, in a nod toward workflow efficiency, they eliminate valuable staff time spent cleaning, sterilizing, and processing instruments.

“Over the course of several days, I used SimpliCut on every single one of my cases—regardless of what material I needed to access through," shared Meredith Y. Newman, DMD, an endodontist who practices in Fresno, CA. "One thing I really liked was the bur packaging. Other burs have a foil-style backing, which can be impossible to open. With SimpliCut, I was able to pop the bur through the paper backing very easily. And as for the functionality, these burs are fantastic!

"On the enamel, even under the microscope, I did not see any microfracturing occur near the access. With resin, they were able to cut very effectively, smoother than a carbide bur. They cut porcelain with no resistance, and with zirconia—by far the hardest material to drill through—they cut efficiently and smoothly without any jumping of the bur or sparking of the material. Most wonderfully, I was able to get through an entire zirconia crown using only one bur."

Shapes + Grits = Easy Access

Individually wrapped, presterilized, and available in packs of 25, SimpliCut burs come in a range of shapes and color-coded grit sizes for easy identification. All shanks are designed for true concentric running with less wear and tear on the handpiece turbine.

“The smaller size, C801–012-D, was perfect for anteriors and excellent for accessing mandibular incisors with crowns," said Dr. Newman. "I also used them for premolars to keep my access conservative."
