By the time the conversation about fluoride varnish rolls around, it’s likely that many patients already have one foot out of the dental chair—even more so if they’ve had past experiences with varnishes that left a gooey, clumpy, and overall unpleasant feeling on their teeth. Profisil is a 5% sodium fluoride varnish that’s not made with ethyl alcohol or rosin, eliminating the risk of stinging, burning, bitter aftertaste, and allergic reactions. The mucosa-friendly dimethicone gel offers a pleasant taste and a non-clumping formulation, which translates to a smooth mouthfeel appreciated by patients of all ages.
“Profisil is fairly viscous, tends not to drip, and the flavor is quite pleasant for patients,” shared Jeffrey Moskovic, DDS.
Nix the Allergy Concerns
With immediate and continuous fluoride release, Profisil provides a protective coating to tooth surfaces by occluding tubules with calcium fluoride crystals. Patients can immediately resume eating and drinking after application, and the varnish is free of dyes, preservatives, tree nuts, peanuts, soy, and gluten. “The nonallergic formula leaves one less thing for patients to be concerned about,” Dr. Moskovic added.
Zero Aftertaste
“When I apply it to my patients’ teeth, it seems weightless; it’s very smooth and glossy, easy to spread, never clumpy, and there’s no aftertaste,” added Jessica Raymond-Allbritten, CRDH, BASDH, who practices in Dunedin, FL. “The easy application and the fact that it’s comfortable to wear on the teeth improve patient compliance and acceptance.”
Raymond-Allbritten also said Profisil can be applied in a wet environment, eliminating the task of drying teeth prior to application, which can be a challenge for some patients. Colorless for optimal esthetics, the varnish is also transparent, allowing it to be applied prior to an exam.
