SS White Dental: A Legacy of Innovation

With a rich history that spans nearly 2 centuries, SS White has helped define the practice of modern dentistry

leader in minimally invasive product design

When it comes to a legacy of innovation, few companies can match SS White. Their story begins over 175 years ago when Samuel Stockton White, a young dentist, opened a small, porcelain tooth factory above his downtown Philadelphia practice. A prolific inventor and all-around visionary, White amassed 10 patents and 80 awards for his products in his lifetime. By the end of the 19th century, he had grown SS White into the then “largest dental manufacturing company in the world.”

Today, SS White is a family-owned and -operated business with more than 250 employees and worldwide distribution. Once known as SS White Burs, the company is perhaps most widely recognized for revolutionizing dental bur technology and minimally invasive dentistry. The company dropped “Burs” from their name in 2014 to rebrand as SS White Dental, reflecting their current, broad selection of products.

As a leader in minimally invasive dentistry, SS White is recognized for its contributions over the years that have helped shape modern dentistry and set industry standards. Landmark accomplishments include the first machine-made dental bur in 1891, dentistry’s first carbide bur in 1947, and the first minimally invasive cavity prep burs, Fissurotomy, introduced in 2002.

Samuel Stockton White led a diverse workforce and inspired everyone in his employ to strive for excellence. This is a tradition that SS White Dental continues to this day, as they proudly bear his name and remain dedicated to his original mission: Provide better products for better dentistry.

EXACTTaperH DC NiTi File Systemniti file system

Representing the next generation of minimally invasive NiTi files, EXACTTaperH DC has a variable decreasing taper that reportedly preserves more pericervical dentin than similar fi le systems. A 33% smaller maximum flute diameter allows EXACTTaperH DC files to conform to the natural anatomy of the root canal while providing greater resistance to cyclic fatigue.

According to SS White, EXACTTaperH DC files are 58% stronger than the closest comparable file, which reduces the risk of file separation. Additionally, the manufacturer’s proprietary heat-treating processes grant superior controlled memory and flexibility for up to 90° curves, so the files can navigate even the most complex canal anatomies.

Available in comparable sizes, lengths, and tapers to popular file systems, EXACTTaperH DC files are perfect for practicing minimally invasive dentistry without sacrificing tried-and-true preparation or obturation techniques.

Manta Cordless Endo Handpiecemanta cordless endo handpiece

Portable, compact, and precise, the Manta handpiece allows endodontists to work effectively and comfortably. Its ergonomic design features precision processing technology to minimize vibration, and a mini contraangle head improves vision.

Other conveniences include auto-stop and reverse functions, an intuitive user interface, and easy disconnection. It is compatible with most major brands of NiTi files and has a rechargeable battery that lasts a full workday.

DCTaper NiTi Rotary File Systemdctaper niti

The DCTaper NiTi Rotary File System is a 2-file shaping system that’s easy to use, effi cient, and conserves tooth structure while remaining safe, flexible, and strong. Uniquely designed for deep apical and conservative coronal shaping, the system features a variable “V” decreasing rate of taper from tip to shaft. As a result, DCTaper fi les mirror the natural shape of the root to preserve dentin while improving access, cleaning, and 3D obturation.

Studies show that DCTaper is the strongest tested fi le system on the market, according to SS White, with clinicians using an average of 1 to 2 files per case, which is a low cost for shaping per root canal procedure.

SmartBurs II

Caries removal in deep lesions can lead to pulp exposure, which, in turn, leads to unwanted outcomes like postoperative sensitivity. SmartBurs II are patented self-limiting polymer instruments that remove carious dentin while conserving healthy tooth structure.

Developed in collaboration with cardiologists, SmartBurs II are just hard enough to cut softer, decayed dentin but leave harder, healthier dentin intact. Studies have shown that SmartBurs II deliver a safe, comfortable treatment experience for patients (especially those who decline anesthesia or cannot tolerate it) as well as peace of mind for clinicians working in deep carious lesions. SmartBurs II are indicated for use in right-angle handpieces.a word from our evaluators

Fissurotomy Burs

For early diagnosis, conservative preparation, and treatment of hidden fissure caries, often without the use of anesthesia, clinicians should look no further than Fissurotomy. These burs feature an innovative head shape that allows conservative exploration of fi ssures and a virtually painfree technique that leaves an ideal cavity form for a flowable composite. Fissurotomy burs come in multiple tip sizes to treat permanent and deciduous teeth and have a fi ne carbide tip that will not strip quickly
