Like a painter’s brush or musician’s instrument, the right dental handpiece can feel like an extension of the clinician, making every action easy and effortless. And given how much action these tools see in day-to-day dentistry, having a handpiece that feels great to work with is a necessity. For Shonn Farni, DMD, who for nearly 30 years has practiced alongside his twin brother, Dr. Courtland Farni, in their hometown of Mobile, AL, DENTALEZ’s Star 430 Torque handpieces fit the bill.

Building on a Proven Legacy

The popular 430 Series—which came to market over 40 years ago—has been a go-to high-speed handpiece for generations of dentists. Built to perform through years of daily use, 430 handpieces are available in both swivel and fixed back-end configurations, and with a 45-degree angled head ideal for performing specialty procedures.

The Star 430 Torque builds on that legacy, delivering reliable performance even with everyday use. Packing 27 watts of power into a sleek stainless-steel body with durable ceramic bearings, the 430 Torque offers fast, precise cutting and drilling across a range of configurations. Dentists have the freedom to choose between solid glass rod fiber-optic (430SWL) and non-fiber-optic (430SW) models, each available in lubricated and “LubeFree” options.

“My personal preference is the LubeFree 430SWL Torque,” Dr. Shonn shared. “From head to toe, it gives me the best-case scenario to operate in.” Though he appreciates that the LubeFree model minimizes the need for maintenance and cleaning, having purchased a lubricated 430SW for the practice as well, he confirms that both options perform equally well. “I’ll happily pick up any Star 430 handpiece and go to work,” he said.

An Ergonomic Edge

In Dr. Farni’s experience, what truly makes the Star 430 Torque enjoyable to use is its exceptional ergonomics. “With other handpieces I’ve used over the years, I’ve found that the heads were bulky, making them cumbersome to work with,” he explained. “They limited visibility of the working area, and also hindered access to hard-to-reach areas like the buccal and distal of second molars, which made it difficult to treat patients with limited openings.”

However, with an 11-mm head size, “the 430 Torque has the smallest head of any handpiece I’ve used,” Dr. Shonn said. Coupled with the built-in fiber-optic illumination of the 430SWL, this design readily lets him see and access any area of the oral cavity, consistently reducing hassle and saving valuable chair time.

Dr. Shonn pointed out that the Star 430 Torque’s ergonomic benefits don’t end with head size. “It also features a body that fits naturally in your grasp, as well as a360° swivel that moves freely and doesn’t bind or create wrist strain,” he explained.

He additionally reported that the combination of the handpiece’s light weight and ideal shape enable “effortless fine motor movements,” maximizing operator precision. And despite its powerful performance, the Star 430 Torque stays remarkably quiet and cool under pressure, ensuring patient comfort even during more challenging procedures.

A Star in Any Practice

While dentists today may have a galaxy of handpieces to choose from, the Star 430 Torque undeniably shines bright. “I really think the design of the 430 Torque makes it the best handpiece on the market,” Dr. Shonn said. “Having a handpiece that can work in the smallest of mouths and limit procedure time is a win for both the doctor and patient.” It’s no surprise that the 430 Torque has become a star in the Farni brothers’ practice, which is aptly named Farni and Farni Family Dentistry.

“It’s a workhorse that definitely makes operatory life easier," he concluded.
