Dr. Schmedding has found CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES-2 Universal to be extremely effective in the posterior. “It covers a very wide range of shades, and it’ll give you enough blend and lifelike effect to match the existing tooth so that you really have no esthetic issues,” he shared.
Since there is only shade—and just 1 material on hand—Dr. Schmedding saves time in his procedures. “It certainly takes away from having to evaluate and decide on a shade—and that is something that can take multiple sets of eyes to come and help me with that,” he explained. “So, it saves small increments of time, but that certainly does add up.”
Due to the material’s specific level of translucency and the integration of Kuraray’s Light Diffusion Technology (LDT), no blocker or opaquer is needed. LDT makes restorations diffuse light in a way that’s similar to natural tooth structure, enabling the composite to integrate easily and smoothly into the preparation, resulting in virtually invisible margins.
The fact that blockers and opaquers are not needed allows another step in the process to be eliminated. Dr. Schmedding said he can stand behind Kuraray’s claim that this is a universal product where 1 shade does it all. “It works effectively with blocking out underlying shades without me having to use a blocker or opaquer,” he shared. “When you’re using a universal composite, it’s because you want that 1-shade effect and that simplification of setup.”

High-Quality Products
Generally, the CLEARFIL MAJESTY ES-2 Universal is very helpful for Dr. Schmedding with Class V restorations, since many teeth have different colorations closer to the gum line. “Universal is helpful because I can blend a whole section of tooth structure easily and not have to worry about different shades to match the tooth,” he noted.
However, according to Dr. Schmedding, the greatest benefit of using Kuraray’s products is in the high-end manufacturing and production.
“The biggest selling point for me is that the composite has great physical properties,” he explained. “We focus a lot on the product being universal, but what we should really be focusing on is a good composite that is going to hold up. Who cares if it blends if it just breaks down in 6 months?”
Dr. Schmedding lauded the product’s handling properties and added that it’s adaptable, stays in place, and is not overly sticky. “It’s truly easy to work with,” he concluded. “It’s just a very good composite in terms of strength and the other things we need for long-lasting restorations.”
