While dentists are accustomed to working within the confined space of the oral cavity, it often requires some creative maneuvering. This is especially true when working on a posterior tooth that is difficult to visualize, challenging to access, and requires awkward wrist positioning to manipulate the handpiece to just the right angle.

As Dr. Kevin Anderson puts it, “There are certain teeth both restoratively or surgically that can present challenging ergonomics when working in the posterior.” Hoping to improve access and ergonomics during procedures, especially in posterior areas, Dr. Anderson was eager to try out a new electric handpiece with a unique working angle, the KaVo MASTERmatic LUX M45 L.

Unique Head Angle

Compatible with Dr. Anderson’s KaVo ELECTROmatic motor and a complement to the other MASTERmatic electric handpieces in his Oakdale, MN, practice, the M45 L is suitable for both restorative and surgical procedures. Its revolutionary head/knee angle combination (42°/100°) allows for superior access to the posterior region, and glass fiber optics illuminate small details.

Delighted with the handpiece’s “great ergonomics, especially when compared to other electric driven handpieces,” Dr. Anderson said it is very helpful when sectioning molars. “When the situation calls for a 42-degree handpiece or surgical handpiece, this is a nice tool to have in the toolbelt,” he noted.

Similarly, Dr. Adam Beno relies on the ELECTROmatic motor and other MASTERmatic handpieces in his Fort Myers, FL, dental practice. He enjoyed adding the M45 L to his armamentarium, praising its “improved access to posterior teeth using the new angle of the handpiece,” which he finds especially helpful with posterior crown preparations and during extractions.

Impressive Torque

For efficient cutting performance, the M45 L reaches 168,000 rpm, and KaVo CoolHead technology keeps the handpiece cool. “The M45 L is awesome for sectioning teeth during surgeries,” shared Dr. Anderson. “When sectioning molars with this handpiece, it is very quiet, has great torque, and does not lose any torque while cutting through both tooth and old restorative materials,” he added.

“The M45 L handpiece has excellent torque and power so you can complete a crown prep in the posterior with improved access,” Dr. Beno noted. “Also, you can utilize it during an extraction to section a crown off and the tooth itself without risk of an air embolism,” he added, referring to a safety feature that blocks the chip air and uses just water for cooling.

A 'Lifesaver' That's Quiet and Powerful

The KaVo MASTERmatic LUX M45 L electric handpiece offers clinicians flexibility and adaptability for a wide variety of applications.

Dr. Anderson called it “a lifesaver” for situations where a 42-degree angled handpiece is needed, and Dr. Beno declared, “This handpiece is one of the quietest, most powerful handpieces that I have used.”
