When a product is easy to use and works well, it’s usually on its way to becoming an operatory staple. That’s the case with VOCO Retraction Paste. An astringent paste designed for the temporary retraction and moisture management of gingival sulcus, it is a recent addition to VOCO’s German-engineered product line of innovative dental materials.
For Ron Kaminer, DDS, Hewlett, NY, VOCO Retraction Paste has quickly become a favorite in his operatory for how quick and easy it is to use, largely due to its unique tip design.
“The No. 1 advantage with VOCO Retraction Paste is that it doesn’t require a secondary cotton capsule to push the material down into the gum tissue,” he explained. “When you dispense it, the tip will slide at the gum tissue and the material will displace it on its own. So, there’s no need for patients to bite down in order to position the paste. It also has a long canula, which allows for easy placement into the sulcus.”
Designed for Speed
Aluminum-chloride-based for a clean and dry sulcus, VOCO Retraction Paste has a unique tip made of soft plastic that helps avoid injury to the sulcus while enhancing patient comfort. This extra-long, thin, and flexible tip allows for safe, hygienic, and precise application into the sulcus, a design feature that makes it up to 50% faster than using traditional retraction cord alone.
“When you’re placing cord, you need to put a hemostatic on it and then wait a good 3 to 5 minutes for it to displace the tissue,” Dr. Kaminer explained. By contrast, VOCO Retraction Paste has a short application time of 1 to 2 minutes, after which it can be rinsed off easily, allowing for a quick cleanup. “With the VOCO Retraction Paste, once you place it into the sulcus it rinses off quickly with no residue, which is not the case with other retraction pastes I’ve used. It’s very fast.”
The Right Consistency
VOCO Retraction Paste capsules are available in a SingleDose blister pack that eliminates hygiene concerns. It presents as a turquoise blue color, which means it contrasts well with the gingiva. “This is definitely bright, which makes it easy to see,” Dr. Kaminer shared.
Formulated with a 2-stage viscosity, VOCO Retraction Paste is initially flowable for easy, low-force application, but then stabilizes for optimal retraction. This ideal consistency means that less force is required to extrude the paste when compared with similar products. “It’s easy to extrude out, and once you place it on the sulcus it firms up a bit, so it sits exactly where you place it,” Dr. Kaminer explained.
The paste can be used as an alternative to retraction cord or in tandem with it for both digital and conventional impressions.
“It works really well as a tissue retraction for crowns, inlays, onlays, and veneers. Most importantly, when you rinse it off the area will be dry, which is critical for digital scanning,” Dr. Kaminer added.

Added Patient Comfort
Another advantage, Dr. Kaminer believes, is that VOCO Retraction Paste is more comfortable for patients. “With retraction cord, especially if you have an endodontically treated tooth, you often have to anesthetize the sulcus or else the patient will be uncomfortable when you place the cord. With this paste, there’s no discomfort at all. It’s also important to note that placing cord is quite technique-sensitive and not always that easy to do,” he added. “In my experience, this retraction paste is easy to work with, easy to see, easy to place, and does what it’s supposed to do without any other accessory materials. That simplifies my workflow,” he concluded.
