Approach a tooth from any angle with this lightweight and ergonomic handpiece that makes quick work of the polishing procedure
Crystal Barnes attended Salt Lake Community College and graduated as a registered dental hygienist in 2014. She has been in practice as a dental hygienist for 10 years and in the dental fi eld for 14. She enjoys meeting different people, the challenges of managing patients’ oral health, and the treatment of periodontal disease. Prior to hygiene, she was a surgical assistant for 4 years with Utah Periodontal Specialists, where she thrived and broadened her knowledge in periodontal education. While working there, she discovered her love of learning and treating patients, and knew that dental hygiene would be a great fi t. She is a dental hygiene clinical advisor for Ultradent.
While patients are in a constant battle to keep biofilm at bay, hygienists face a different daily struggle—getting their equipment to work with them and not against them. For Crystal Barnes, RDH, the solution is simple: Ultradent’s Ultrapro Tx Cordless hygiene handpiece. In this article, she explains how this lightweight, quiet, and easy-to-use device delivers a comfortable cleaning on both sides of the chair.
We often use the Ultrapro Tx Cordless with the Ultrapro Tx Sweep prophy angles, which add a really nice touch to the polishing procedure. I find that I don't go through nearly as much product when I use these angles. When I put prophy paste into the cup, I’m not losing it in the patient’s saliva, and the built-in bristles easily collect any excess polish. I like that I can reach behind a tooth and pick up some of the paste without it whipping around or falling into the patient’s mouth.
A Handpiece Hygienists Deserve
The Ultrapro Tx Cordless is so easy to use and its design is really simple. All you need is a Bluetooth connection for the foot pedal and you’re ready to go. You don’t need to worry about toggling between different speeds, which makes it an easy transition for the practice. Being able to autoclave the outer sheath is amazing, and the battery life of both the foot pedal and handpiece is great. I’ve tried to leave my handpiece out of the charger as long as possible to see when it dies, and so far, it hasn't.
If a hygienist has the opportunity to use a cordless handpiece, I know that they'll instantly fall in love with it. It's not loud, it’s very comfortable for the patient, and it helps prevent body issues and muscle fatigue. I think if hygienists push to have this device in their office, doctors will at least consider the idea. It’s small, it’s easy, and it’s affordable, so why not?
