A Simi Valley, CA, general dentist for more than a decade, Varo Boyer, DDS, has worked with his fair share of file systems during endodontic patient care. He recently tried out EdgeEndo’s EdgeTaper Blaze Utopia file system, featuring FireWire Blaze heat-treatment technology, and was very pleased with the results. Here, he details how this rotary file system offered flexibility, strength, and easy access during a particularly complex root canal treatment involving a friend's young daughter.

I’ve always had the impression that EdgeEndo is a well-organized, professional company dedicated to the improvement of dental care. After using the EdgeTaper Blaze Utopia rotary files, I am pleased to say the system actually speaks for itself! The files are very high quality and easy to use, and I felt comfortable using them almost instantly. In fact, I have a wonderful example that perfectly illustrates my experience.

Young Patient, Complex Treatment

My young patient had an upper first premolar that needed root canal treatment. Since she was my friend’s daughter who was already partially unhappy that her Class II restoration had turned into a crown and a root canal, I knew immediately that a smooth navigation of the landscape was necessary.

As I expected, the premolar had 2 canals, but the palatal canal was calcified and had an unusual path. Normally, the palatal canal is the easier one to navigate, but in this case both the location of the orifice and the path were unusual. First, it was challenging to find the canal, and then the usual hand files would stop 3 to 4 mm short of the apex. No amount of lubricant, new files, or new sizes would allow me to get past. I was also worried about forcing the path and either causing a perforation or transportation/ledge.

I used EdgeEndo’s EdgeTaper Blaze Utopia files both to locate the canal and successfully navigate all the way to the apex. Given my past experiences with these files, I knew I did not have to be as overly cautious as usual, since these are stronger and more flexible files. The system helped me not only to instrument the canals, but also to find and confirm the path of an un-negotiated canal and avoid perforation. I was able to clean the canals thoroughly, navigate dilacerated roots and calcified canals with confidence, and then seal them for long-term success.

For a general dentist who's not doing 10 root canals a day, it is even more important to have a safe, intuitive, and efficient system—and that’s exactly my experience with EdgeTaper Blaze Utopia.
