ANDREW C. JOHNSON, DDS, MDS, CDT

Dr. Johnson completed his general dental and prosthodontic training at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) and has been practicing in Northwest Arkansas since 2013. Along with his specialist certificate, Dr. Johnson earned a master’s degree in dental science while researching CAD/CAM restorative techniques and emerging digital dental materials. He maintains certifications from both the American Board of Prosthodontics and the National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology and serves as adjunct faculty with the UTHSC Advanced Prosthodontics Program. He has been published in multiple dental journals and lectures internationally on a variety of topics in next-generation dentistry.

Andrew C. Johnson, DDS, MDS, CDT, practices on both sides of the restorative equation: chairside diagnosis and prosthetic fabrication. A surgical prosthodontist, certifi ed dental technician, and owner of OmniSmile Digital Dental Solutions in Fayetteville, AR, Dr. Johnson needed an intraoral scanner that was precise and fast enough for chairside workfl ows, yet versatile enough to support the technical demands of appliance and restoration design. Here, he shares how he found the ideal solution in the DEXIS Imprevo.

In my practice, I essentially do 2 jobs at once: I'm the dentist acquiring the scan and the technician digitally planning and producing the restoration. Running an in-house lab means the data I capture chairside lands right back on my own bench—so I know firsthand how much scan quality determines whether a restoration or appliance fits.

That dual role makes it critical to have a scanner that holds up at every step. I've used a dozen scanners over the years and I've sometimes had issues with ill-fitting prosthetics, patient discomfort, and lost time from retakes. But I've found the balance I need with the DEXIS Imprevo.

With the Imprevo, I have confidence that what I'm scanning will allow me to produce the physical results my treatment plan requires. With other scanners I've used in the past, I would often think, "Is this going to have a closed margin?" With the Imprevo, that's no longer a worry. I have complete confidence in the scanner's data quality and accuracy.

I use the Imprevo for virtually everything in my practice, from diagnostic intake scans to intra- and extraoral scans of removable prostheses. It's very good at picking up preparation margins, so I use it for all restorative crown-and-bridge scanning, as well as implants and full-mouth reconstructions. It really is a workhorse machine.

The IS ScanFlow software is incredibly intuitive. For example, if I'm in the middle of scanning, I can change my mind about what I need to acquire because the software allows me to add additional scans as I go. Imprevo captures ultra-detailed scan data, and its wireless design is sleek and compact for easier access, which is especially helpful since my patients range from 3-year-old kids with limited compliance to 90-year-old adults with limited opening.

Scan Quality You Can Rely On

The 25-mm depth of field is also a significant benefit. While it's critical to get good data in deep preps and tight interproximal spaces, what matters even more to me is using Imprevo extra-orally to scan appliances like dentures out of my hand.

I've never had any functional issues when it comes to the fit of my restorations or prosthetics, and I believe the scanner's high speed speaks to its fluidity as I'm scanning.

In a practice that operates as both a dental office and a digital laboratory, we encounter plenty of issues in the clinic and plenty of issues in the lab. It's nice to know that scan quality is not one of them.
