Dr. Kim received his dental degree from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and completed his periodontology training and Doctor of Medical Science in oral biology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM), where he is an associate professor. A diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, Dr. Kim has received numerous honors, including the Joseph L. Henry Award from Harvard, the Balint Orban Research Award, the Award for Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring in Periodontics, and both Junior and Senior Faculty Awards from HSDM. His clinical and research interests focus on innovative approaches to soft- and hard-tissue regeneration, bone regeneration, and dental implant therapy, with extensive publications in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks.

THE Graft Collagen is a xenograft with a collagen matrix made by Purgo Biologics, a notable brand entering the U.S. market. The biomaterial provides a secure environment for predictable bone-grafting procedures, including alveolar ridge preservation. Here, Dr. David M. Kim, a board-certified periodontist and associate professor at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, discusses what makes THE Graft Collagen unique.

A male patient recently presented to my office with the clinical signs and symptoms of a fracture on tooth No. 19. The treatment plan was to perform an alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) and delayed implant placement. After full-thickness flap elevation, the tooth was removed atraumatically and ARP was suggested due to a visibly thin buccal plate, which is prone to resorption.

THE Graft Collagen was chosen as the biomaterial for this case due to its ease of use and predictability in bone regeneration. Because the socket walls were intact, no barrier membrane was required. After 6 months, excellent soft-tissue healing was noted, along with outstanding quality and quantity of regenerated bone with minimal residual graft particles remaining.

Seamless Integration

What sets THE Graft Collagen apart is its exceptional biocompatibility. The combination of porcine-derived bone, which closely resembles human bone, and Type I collagen promotes seamless integration and long-term stability. Healing is smooth, and the graft integrates naturally with the surrounding tissues, creating an environment that supports both simple and complex procedures. Its moldable consistency allows for precise adaptation to defects. It stays in place without scattering, and it can be easily contained with or without a membrane. The combination of biocompatibility and ideal physical characteristics ensures that each case results in vital and dense bone volume, enabling predictable primary stability during implant placement and achieving long-lasting osseointegration.

Simple Handling + Predictable Results

Handling of THE Graft Collagen is simple and intuitive. Unlike loose granules, it can be easily cut, shaped, and adapted to the defect site, streamlining alveolar ridge preservation procedures, which typically involve particulate grafts and rigid membranes.

Extensive clinical documentation gives both clinicians and patients confidence in using THE Graft Collagen, providing a safe, reliable, and effective option for alveolar ridge preservation.
