ZirClean and Z-Prime Plus: A Predictable Pair

Due to the esthetics and durability of zirconia crowns, many dental practices have been making the switch from traditional porcelain, ceramic, or porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns to zirconia. This includes Dr. Steven Edelson, who told DPS, “Zirconia crowns are predominantly the crowns that I place—I’d say in about 95% of cases.” A few scenarios where zirconia crowns are particularly useful, he shared, include when patients have chronic tooth grinding and clinching issues, when interocclusal space is limited, or for patients who have a history of fracturing PFM crowns.

Eliminating Saliva Contamination
When placing a zirconia crown, “the receptor sites in the intaglio surface of the crown gets contaminated with phosphates from the patient’s saliva, which reduces the crown’s retention,” shared Dr. Edelson. By using BISCO’s ZirClean after try-in, the phosphate contamination of zirconia is eliminated, leading to better bond strength.* With a syringe delivery system, ZirClean improves ease of use by offering precise placement, and it washes off easily for simple cleanup.
Ensuring a Strong Bond
Featuring a unique formula that combines two active monomers— MDP, a phosphate monomer, and BPDM, a carboxylate monomer— Z-Prime Plus amplifies the bond strength to zirconia, alumina, and metal substrates. “The added benefit of using Z-Prime Plus means that the crowns I cement rarely, if ever, debond. I really do not use other primers because of my success with Z-Prime Plus,” Dr. Edelson shared.
