It can be challenging to find a cost-effective, bioactive endodontic sealer, but there are several key characteristics to look for that will ensure effective sealing of the root canal system. Here are 4 important characteristics to look for in a root canal sealer:

1)    Sealing Ability: The root canal sealer must create an impermeable seal between the root canal filling material (usually gutta-percha) and the canal walls. Look for a sealer with excellent sealing ability to prevent the entry of microorganisms and fluids, minimizing the risk of reinfection.

2)    Adhesion and Flow: A good root canal sealer should have proper adhesion to both gutta-percha and dentin surfaces. It should also exhibit the right consistency, allowing for easy flow into the intricate and often irregular root canal spaces. Adequate flow ensures complete coverage of the canal walls, which is essential for effective sealing.

3)    Biocompatibility: Ideally, the sealer will be biocompatible, meaning it should not cause adverse reactions in the periapical tissues. Tissue response to the material may influence the outcome of the endodontic treatment.

4)    Radiopacity: Radiopacity is a crucial characteristic as it allows for easy identification of the sealer on radiographs. This is essential for assessing the quality of the root canal treatment and ensuring proper root filling and sealing.

Factors such as setting time, dimensional stability, and ease of handling are also important considerations when choosing a root canal sealer. The choice of sealer may also depend on the specific requirements of the case and, of course, dentist preference.
