Combining nanodiamonds and gutta percha could improve clinical outcomes for endodontic treatment, according to results of a clinical trial just published  in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. UCLA researchers found that gutta percha impregnated with nanodiamonds (NDGP) was less likely to buckle or break than unmodified gutta percha, thus protecting the disinfected canal after nerve and pulp removal. Tested patients healed properly without incident, and the technique is the same as traditional RCT.

"This trial confirms the immense promise of using nanodiamonds to overcome barriers for a range of procedures, from particularly challenging endodontics cases to orthopedics, tissue engineering, and others," said Dr. Mo Kang, UCLA Dentistry's Jack Weichman Professor of Endodontics.
