When choosing ceramics for dental restorations, several factors are crucial to consider:

Esthetics/Ease of Use: Ceramics should mimic natural tooth color and translucency to achieve esthetic harmony with adjacent teeth. Also consider ease of handling and manipulation.

Biocompatibility, Strength, and Durability: Make sure the material is biocompatible, nontoxic, and safe for use in the oral cavity. The material should be strong enough to withstand the forces of chewing and biting.

Fit and Marginal Integrity: Ceramics should allow for precise fitting and marginal integrity to prevent bacterial leakage and secondary decay. Consider the patient’s occlusion, parafunctional habits (like grinding), and overall dental health.

Stain/Wear Resistance: Materials should be resistant to staining from food, beverages, and oral hygiene products. Also ensure the material resists wear to maintain shape and surface integrity.

Compatibility with Different Techniques: Consider the compatibility with fabrication techniques such as CAD/CAM milling or traditional laboratory techniques.

By considering these factors, dentists can ensure optimal outcomes in terms of esthetics, function, and longevity of dental restorations.
