Want to Be a ‘Damn Good Dentist’? Use Single-Patient-Use Burs

An ergonomic handpiece combined with a high-performing bur is key to removing caries-infected dentin and quickly cutting through old restorations made from materials like ceramic, metal, or zirconia. But while there are quite literally thousands of burs to choose from when you consider the various shape, size, and length options available, there is one benefit that is not optional: fast cutting.

NeoDiamond BursMicrocopy puts fast cutting at a premium with its NeoDiamond product line, which last year celebrated its 30th anniversary. NeoDiamond burs are single-patient-use, a term coined by the manufacturer’s co-founder Thom Maas Jr. His vision, which remains in sharp focus today, was to offer clinicians a sterile diamond bur without compromising quality and efficiency.

“The single-patient-use burs maintain their cutting ability during multiple tooth preparations,” shared Dr. Dory Stutman, who uses NeoDiamond and NeoBurr NeoMax Carbide Metal Cutters in his Massapequa Park, NY, practice. “My final tooth preparation is always smooth with sharp margins—just how I want it to be.”

Dr. Stutman joins a growing group of other “Damn Good Dentists” who prefer using single-patient-use burs to speed up their preps and create ideal restorative outcomes. Fast-cutting ability and a wide variety of shapes and sizes from which to choose has allowed Dr. Stutman to use Microcopy single-patient-use burs almost exclusively for many years.

Meet another “Damn Good Dentist,” Craig Vinkovich, DDS, and find out why he feels there is incredible value in using disposable burs.

Among the myriad reasons to use single-patient-use diamonds instead of their autoclavable counterparts, a sharp, fresh bur with unclogged diamonds can lead to faster preparations, less patient trauma, and reduced handpiece wear. Plus, the sterilization of autoclavable instruments can be both time-consuming and ineffective.

Microcopy’s NeoDiamond burs are individually wrapped in a clear, white poly packet so that they can be easily identified by their diamond number, shape, description, and grit size. “Patients always like to see instruments coming straight out of the single-use packet. It reassures them more that the bur is sterile versus when they see previously used burs on a bur block,” added Dr. Stutman.
