Septodont’s Biodentine is a bioceramic dentin substitute that can be used to repair and rebuild damaged dentin. Biodentine is made from a patented formulation, Active Biosilicate Technology. This formulation is made within strict medical grade conditions and is manufactured from the purest form of calcium silicates, ensuring a pure product without aluminates and other metal by-products. Whether it is placed in the crown or the root of a tooth, Biodentine is designed to maintain pulp vitality while stimulating hard tissue formation (reactive or reparative/tertiary dentin). Comprised of an innovative “pulp-protective” chemistry with dentin-like mechanical properties and behavior, Biodentine is an alternative to conventional calcium hydroxide-based products.
Biodentine is very versatile, with applications in restorative, endodontic, and pediatric cases. It can be used to replace lost dentin, restore damaged dentin, and stabilize existing dentin. Indications include pulp protection, temporary filling, deep caries management, cervical fillings, temporary enamel restoration, permanent dentin restoration, cervical or radicular lesions, pulp capping, and in pulpotomies. It’s also useful in root furcation perforations, internal/external resorptions, apexification, and as a retrograde surgical filling.
Being bioactive and biocompatible, Biodentine has a positive effect on vital pulp cells and has been shown to stimulate tertiary dentin formation. When it is in direct contact with vital pulp tissue, it also promotes the formation of reparative dentin. When used in properly selected cases, it is believed to contribute to long-term tooth vitality. Because Biodentine has a micro mechanical bond, it has been shown to bond better to the teeth than calcium hydroxide, it does not resorb, and it offers better mechanical stability than traditional calcium hydroxide.
