Consider Switching to Single-Use Diamond Burs
When it comes to diamond burs, quality and performance are everything.
Better performance means faster cutting and ultimately less chair time. It also means seamless workflow, where patients are happier and your office is more profitable. To me, a non-dentist, the benefits of single-patient-use diamond burs seem obvious. But I’m guessing that if you’re a dentist who is accustomed to using, sterilizing, and re-using burs, you might not realize the impact that protocol has on your practice, your staff, and patients.
I recently discovered why Microcopy leaves no room for doubt when it comes to the benefits and advantages of single-patient-use diamond burs.
Here are the top 5 reasons to switch to Single-use diamonds:
Reduced overhead cost:
Cleaning and sterilizing used diamond-heads cost money. Extra cleaning, sterilizing and storage areas require office space that can be used for something better. Focus on what you do best, service patients!
Faster Preps:
All diamonds get clogged, a primary contributor to why they stop cutting
Less Patient Trauma:
It takes more pressure to make a dull diamond work
Less Handpiece Repair
Infection Control:
Re-Sterilization will never be as effective as using a new tool
Avoid infections and stop dangerous bacteria from spreading
Dr. Joe Blaes, a writer for Dental Economics claims he started to use disposable diamonds and quickly realized he was able to produce a better dentistry for patients each time he prepped a tooth using a new diamond.
Dr. Blaes says, “I searched for a company that produced disposable diamonds. That’s when I found NeoDiamonds from a company called Microcopy. When I was using reusable diamonds, I had a bur block with 30 diamonds. I am not sure how I ever decided which bur to use, and I know I lost plenty of time just looking at all those diamonds and trying to make a decision. But NeoDiamonds comes with 25 diamonds of one size wrapped in sterile packages in a dispensing box. To control my inventory, I put a system in place for the diamonds that I would use for certain preps. Over time, I reduced the bur block from 30 diamonds to six that I use for preparing teeth for crowns, veneers, inlays, and onlays."
The Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research shows that even after a serious cleaning, reusable burs and diamonds will still grow bacteria after being sterilized. The best way to sterilize a bur is, you guessed it, throw it away! OSHA makes the claim, burs are difficult to clean and are degraded by the sterilization process, recommending dental offices consider making burs a single-use disposable item.
