Tongue Retraction Made Simple

As many dental professionals will testify, managing the tongue while suctioning with a high-volume evacuator (HVE) can be tricky business. In order to simultaneously protect the tissue and maintain adequate suction, dental assistants and other clinicians often find themselves with both hands tied. Typically, one hand must keep the patient’s tongue at bay with a mirror while the other maneuvers the HVE tip. Even still, the tongue can slip out from behind its protective barrier and into harm’s way.

To combat this challenge, Kulzer, a global leader in dental materials, has introduced Ivory® LinguaGuard™, a convenient and disposable add-on retraction aid for the vented end of an HVE. LinguaGuard continues the company’s tradition of innovation with mindfulness towards productivity and patient comfort and allows clinicians to use a single apparatus for one-handed tongue retraction. In addition to offering enhanced safety, stability and suction, LinguaGuard frees up an operator’s hand, allowing them to perform additional tasks such as handling materials and instruments or rinsing. This ultimately promotes a more efficient workflow and helps reduce time spent chairside.

LinguaGuard features a simple, wrap design that easily slides and locks onto an HVE tip, ensuring both a strong fit and stable support. By applying gentle pressure to the tongue, cheek or lips, the device’s curved shape and relatively large surface area provide safe, comfortable and effective retraction. Available in 100-count, LinguaGuard is suitable for one-time use and is BPA- and Latex-free.
