Having the right technology can make or break relationships with patients as well as referring doctors. It was normal when I was young for a general dentist to send patients to a specialist to determine if he or she needed a root canal or it was time to pull wisdom teeth. But today, it’s more common for dentists to have the diagnostic technology that allows them to fully participate in collaborating with specialists—and they certainly expect specialists to have technologies such as a CBCT or CAD/CAM systems.

Many surgeons use the latest imaging systems to treatment plan guided surgery, combining 2D and 3D images as well as digital scans and full-color intraoral photographs provided by the referring dentist to map out the steps for providing implants, implant-retained restorations, and bone augmentation if necessary. Dentists expect specialists to have these technologies at their disposal to help them reach the correct diagnosis and to carry out their part of the treatment safely. They prefer to be able to tell their patients they are going to get the best, most up-to-date care when they entrust them into another doctor’s hands. It also helps both parties to communicate better, and on the same level, with the mutual patient. With easy-to-implement and understand software, images can more readily be shared between clinicians, detailed reports can be generated, and treatment plans can be fully explained to patients with before and after pictures of their own anatomy.

Carestream Dental’s CS 3D Imaging software/Prosthetic-Driven Implant Planning module offers a one-click process for generating an implant report that is customized to the patient, includes the patient’s images and data, and all the referring office’s notations and information. The system integrates seamlessly with Carestream Dental’s CS 8100 3D system and CS 3600 intraoral scanner to form a complete picture of where the case is and where it’s heading. Carestream Dental’s technology streamlines communication, keeping everyone in the loop, and impressing upon patients that they are receiving state-of-the art care.
