Atraumatic extraction technique relies on periotomes and luxators to sever the periodontal ligament before forceps use — minimizing bone trauma and preserving ridge volume for future implant placement. Thin-bladed instruments with ergonomic handles that allow precise controlled pressure are rated most highly by DPS surgical instrument evaluators.

Mild to moderate periodontitis — Stage I and II — is well within the scope of a general practice using scaling and root planing, locally delivered antimicrobials, and 3-month recall intervals. Stage III and IV periodontitis with significant bone loss, furcation involvement, or surgical needs typically warrants periodontal referral for definitive treatment.

Socket preservation with a bone graft material placed immediately after extraction significantly reduces ridge resorption compared to unassisted healing — particularly important when implant placement is planned. Allograft materials are the most commonly used in general practice for ease of handling and favorable regenerative outcomes.

Dry socket treatment involves irrigating the socket with saline to remove debris, placing a medicated dressing to relieve pain and protect the exposed bone, and scheduling follow-up visits until the socket heals. Products containing eugenol provide analgesia but may delay healing — non-eugenol formulations are increasingly preferred for this reason.

Independent panels of practicing dentists and hygienists use products in their own offices for approximately 4 weeks, rating on criteria including clinical performance, ergonomics, patient outcomes, and ease of technique. Products scoring 4.3 or above earn the DPS Best Product designation.
