Suitable for all cementation needs, Panavia V5 results in predictable, ultrastrong, highly esthetic restorations
In a perfect world, dentists could rely on a single cement for all restorations. Too often, however, the benefi ts of a universal cement come at the expense of less-than-optimal durability, esthetics, or ease of use. Kuraray sought to change that with Panavia V5, which the manufacturer says is the strongest and most esthetic dentin bonding cement it has ever developed.
Could Panavia V5 be that one simple dental bonding cement that meets all restorative needs? We asked a group of dentists to use it in their practices for several weeks and report their fi ndings for this DPS evaluation.
J. Jerald Boseman, DDS, who was among those evaluators, was not disappointed. “I loved being able to cement a metal post-and-core and ceramic crown all at the same time with the same product,” he said.
Ease of Dispensing, Application, Cleanup
Panavia V5 offers the simplicity of one easy procedure for all cementation needs, according to Kuraray. The Clearfi l Ceramic Primer Plus included with the kit allows priming of metals, porcelains, zirconia, and other materials, and tooth priming is accomplished in just 20 seconds with Panavia V5 Tooth Primer.
Dr. Boseman was looking for a Panavia product that was more user-friendly and would strongly bond to metal, tooth, and ceramic, but would not set up when cementing metal post-and-core before it’s fully seated. He found that Panavia V5 is easier to use, has a longer set time in anoxic environments, and is less technique sensitive than similar products. Dr. J. Michael Heider said, “Panavia V5 contributes to the effi ciency and streamlining of the delivery process,” and Dr. Donald Roman said he also “enjoyed less complicated chemical preparation.” Dr. Anthony Fusco lauded the product for its handling, and Florida dentist Dr. Steve Taborda said its predictability and ease of use were his favorite features.
Many dentists commented on Panavia V5’s easy cleanup technique. Dr. Taborda praised the dental bonding cement material for its great working time, simple steps, and easy cleanup—especially after experiencing diffi cult cleanup with other adhesive cements. Dr. Chander Bhatti said he was impressed that the cement set well with cure and was still easy to clean, and Dr. Roman appreciated the “ease of use in cleanup and in the bonding/conditioning phases.” Although he would have preferred a shorter dual-cure time, Dr. David Klebanow said his favorite feature was the ease of removal of excess cement after light-curing.
Bond Strength and Esthetics
Panavia V5 Tooth Primer’s MDP monomers create a durable bond to hydroxyapatite, metals, composites, and zirconia in a single drop. The cement’s 5 shades—clear, universal (A2), brown (A4), white, and opaque—remain stable over time without the use of amine in the self-cure mode, and the try-in pastes allow accurate prediction of the fi nal esthetic outcome.
Prior to using this new material, Dr. Heider was hoping to fi nd “a universal cement that works with all the newest ceramics.” After trying Panavia V5, he concluded, “So far the retention has been good with excellent handling properties.” Comparing to previous formulations of Panavia products, Dr. Heider added, “[I’m] glad to see the best characteristics being improved further!” Dr. Klebanow said he “seemed to have fewer recements” with Panavia V5, and Dr. Roman and Dr. Taborda said they would like to see more shades offered.
Versatility
Panavia V5 durably and predictably cements crowns, single-wing cantilever bridges, and veneers, as well as implant abutments in the lab, according to the manufacturer.
“I was able to use it for anterior and posterior situations with veneers and crowns,” said Dr. Taborda, noting that he could deliver the restorations the same day in a very predictable way using an intraoral scanner.
Martin Man, DMD, said that Panavia V5 is excellent for bonded lithium disilicate restorations and pointed out that the ceramic primer in the kit is perfectly mated to the resin cement and the all-in-one tooth primer.
Dr. Bhatti said he delivered 10 e.max crowns in 20 minutes, adding, “The patient was happy that the procedure wasn’t too lengthy.”
Overall Satisfaction
All of the evaluators said they would recommend this dental bonding cement to their colleagues. Dr. Mark Offenback said he liked using Panavia V5 dental bonding cement in part because of the level of confidence with the brand. Dr. Fusco said that although Panavia is highly regarded in the dental community, he had never used it. “I can [now] see it being useful in my practice,” he said.
“It’s a great all-purpose cement,” shared Dr. Robert Dillon. “It can be used on all restorations [and is] a very good product.”
