NexTemp

An easy-to-use temporary cement with reliable retention that lasts between visits but can easily be removed when seating the permanent restoration

It’s safe to say that unreliability and unpredictability are unwelcome intruders into a dental practitioner’s day, especially when dealing with cementation. For example, after dealing with dislodged and broken temporaries and struggling to clean up excess temporary cement, Dr. Peter Schott was hoping to find a better solution. Fortunately for him, after discovering Premier Dental’s NexTemp Temporary Cement during this DPS review, he has found a solution that takes the unreliability out of temporary restorations.

NexTemp has “superb holding ability and is much easier to clean up than our current temporary cement,” shared Dr. Schott. “My assistant just loves NexTemp. Cleanup is much easier and faster during both placement and removal of our temporaries. It leaves very little to no residue on the prep and has fabulous retention,” he added. “This is now our new temporary cement.”

Esthetics & Lack of Postop Sensitivity

NexTemp is available in 2 shades—opaque and clear—and evaluators had the chance to try both shades. “I have never tried a clear temporary cement,” said Dr. Aliisha Choucair. “Usually, if I have an anterior with a thin facial, temporary cements in opaque white would show through, which I don’t think is acceptable, even short term. I typically then would use flowable composite, which sometimes makes the temporary restoration very difficult to remove. NexTemp clear temporary cement fixes this problem beautifully.”

Dispensed in 5-mL automix syringes for clinician convenience, NexTemp is “an easy-to-use syringe delivery system,” according to Dr. Jayendra Patel. Praising the material’s “very good working time,” Dr. David Fang said he would recommend NexTemp to colleagues because of the “cleanup time and viscosity.” Calling the material “easy to express and use,” Dr. Tanya Orr suggested a quicker setting time but proclaimed that “postop sensitivity is nonexistent—which is great!”

NexTemp contains potassium nitrate, chlorhexidine, and fluoride, which guard against microleakage and protect and soothes sensitive dentin, according to the manufacturer.

“NexTemp is great to use, especially if you have a little sensitive pre-prep tooth,” shared Dr. Ken Hsu. “It will help to calm down the tooth.” When redoing a No. 30 zirconia crown with over-contoured and missing margins and surrounding gingiva that was inflamed, bulbous, and bleeding, Dr. Hsu cemented the temporary with NexTemp. When the patient returned in 2 weeks, he “was pleasantly surprised that the patient had healthy gingiva and no soreness or bleeding.”

Retention

NexTemp’s reliable retention was a feature that many evaluators cited as their favorite. Calling it a “good strong temporary cement that we like to use on our long-term provisional crowns,” Dr. Andrew Chen said, “NexTemp holds better than other temporary cements, and we had fewer patients returning for provisional crowns falling out.” Dr. Fang divulged, “I did not have one temporary that dislodged prior to the patient coming back for permanent restoration.” Nervous about the retention of a temporary on a short clinical crown, Dr. Schott used NexTemp and was pleased that “the temp never came out. In fact, at the seating appointment, the temp required a nice tug to pop it off.”

When prepping a patient for a No. 12 crown, Dr. Hsu said his patient was a little sensitive to temperature due to a fractured buccal cusp. After cementing the temporary with NexTemp, “the patient left suddenly for Taiwan for 3 months, leaving me a little worried about the temp being able to stay for that long and if he would be more sensitive after anesthetics wore off,” shared Dr. Hsu. “As it turned out, he had no more sensitivity afterwards or during the whole time abroad. My temporary was still intact, and I was able to deliver a beautiful zirconia esthetic crown.”

Ease of Cleanup & Removal

When asked to name his favorite feature of NexTemp, Dr. Hsu said, “I like that NexTemp is extremely easy to clean up, especially the excess.” After experiencing problems with messy temp cements in the past, Dr. Brett Druger declared, with NexTemp, “the cleanup was easy, and it is a strong product.” Dr. Choucair noted, “Because of the ease of cleanup, the soft tissue was healthier and allowed for a better final cementation.” Another dentist mentioned, “NexTemp held the temporary bridge tight enough when needed and released easily when ready for permanent restoration. The material came out/off in 1 to 2 pieces; I didn’t have to scrape.”

Overall Satisfaction

“I feel confident using NexTemp to cement my next temporary, knowing that it will be safe for the pulp and the surrounding gingiva, and that the temporary restoration will still be intact for the real crown delivery,” Dr. Hsu told DPS. “This is such a superior product to all the other temporary cements we have tried over the years,” Dr. Schott noted, and Dr. Fang concluded, “Overall, this is now my preferred temporary cement!”
