Explorer EX & Explorer PRO
Explorer CBCT combines precise imaging and low radiation with large field of view capability and a first-of-its kind incorporated cephalometric x-ray
Although not entirely comparable to Christopher Columbus, dentists are explorers—just not the Lewis and Clark kind. Exploring a patient’s anatomy to diagnose a problem and, perhaps more importantly, to find a solution, can lead to potentially life-changing treatment for a patient while improving productivity and profitability for the practice.
One such explorer is Dr. Gordon Rye, who has made “countless discoveries that were missed by conventional imaging” since investing in CBCT technology. His trusted imaging partner is PreXion’s Explorer EX, a CBCT system that’s loaded with cutting-edge technologies and features that provide very clear, “extremely easy to manipulate images” and an impressive fi eld of view, while delivering very low radiation doses to patients.
Using Explorer EX, Dr. Rye has “uncovered countless endodontic issues [and] discovered 5-rooted molars, 3- to 4-rooted mandibular canines, and hidden periapical pathologies,” allowing him to improve patient care. He designs all implant surgical guides with the system and “can virtually place an implant in a few minutes,” saving valuable chair time.
With PreXion’s Explorer EX and Explorer PRO, dental practitioners can diagnose previously undetected conditions, offer enhanced treatment options to patients, and, according to Dr. Rye, receive a very high return on investment.
Image Acquisition & Quality
While both Explorer EX and Explorer PRO offer large-field CT and a dedicated panoramic mode, the 3-in-1 Explorer PRO is the first model of its kind with integrated cephalometric x-ray, which saves 2 to 3 feet of office space. Both units feature the industry’s smallest focal spot of 0.3 mm x 0.3 mm, and both offer FOV size options ranging from 5 cm x 5 cm to 15 cm x 16 cm. All scans are completed in a single pass, decreasing distortion and scatter while reducing radiation exposure.
Because of the large FOV, single-pass capability, and unstitched images, Dr. Jeffrey Horowitz chose to purchase both the Explorer EX and Explorer PRO and has never looked back. “It does all of the above with beautiful, unstitched image quality in a large FOV from a single pass,” he said. “I’ve played with other machine images, and none are this easy to manipulate,” reported Dr. Rye. Appreciating the all-in-one scan and software updates provided by Explorer PRO, Dr. Anthony Gonzalez says he can see 3rd molars regularly without worrying about FOV. When asked what he likes best about Explorer PRO, Dr. Pete Gallos replied, “The the quality of image, size, speed, machine quality, support, warranty, and training.

Diagnostics & Treatment Planning
With customizable results for virtually any case and specialty, both Explorer units provide accurate imaging with minimal radiation exposure. Explorer PRO converts from CT or panoramic mode to ceph mode in 30 seconds, with scan times of 20 seconds or less.
“I can detect many things I wasn’t able to see with a panoramic and can see radiation dosages before exposing patients,” said Explorer EX user Dr. Michelle Guo. “I now screen airway patients, do immediate implants in the esthetic zone, and determine the number of root canals before starting an endo case.” With Explorer PRO, Dr. Jennifer White can “evaluate airways and have true 2D ceph in my small space.”
“Productivity and case acceptance went up immediately upon purchase” of the Explorer PRO and EX, said Dr. Horowitz, who said the technology allows for “instant implant planning” and “catches bad airways, bad joints, pathology, cracks in teeth, and perio concerns,” all with “worldclass customer support.”
Customer Support
“PreXion provides top tier service and support. I give them 2 thumbs up!” noted Dr. Felix Liao. Dr. David Ting is pleased that “software can be installed in as many computers as possible” with no monthly service fee.
Overall Satisfaction
“The PreXion Explorers are so reliable; the machines never break down,” said Dr. Ting, whose group owns 9 of the units. Dr. Guo called the Explorer EX “the best you can get for its price range,” and Dr. White said, “It’s perfect, it fits, and I hope it lasts the rest of my career.” Explaining that “the information provided helps make a better diagnosis and treatment plan,” Dr. Edwin Yee concluded, “I cannot imagine practicing without this technology.”
