Dr. Pearl Zadeh is no stranger to VOCO restorative materials, often choosing them over other brands because of the company’s “constant innovation, integrity, and high-quality products.” Always on the lookout for the latest advancements in composite technology, she jumped at the chance to evaluate GrandioSO 4U Universal Restorative Material for DPS.
“GrandioSO 4U is a problem solver,” said Dr. Zadeh after using the material in her practice for several weeks. “I truly loved it!”
Calling it an “esthetic, polishable, strong, and high-quality composite,” she added, “The 4-mm depth of cure is amazing, allowing me to avoid using a separate flowable base material and having to stack packable composite over it. The 10-second cure saved me time and allowed me to reach for only 1 product instead of having to use multiple products to get the same outcome.”
Dispensing, Handling, and Radiopacity
GrandioSO 4U is suitable for anterior and posterior Class I to V restorations in adults and children, along with a host of other indications. It is available in syringes and capsules. The evaluators in this product review used the capsules, which Dr. Justin Milo found easy to use with the ergonomic dispenser.
Pleased with the “homogeneous consistency of GrandioSO 4U,” Dr. Shohreh Sharif said it handled well without crumbling, making it easy to manipulate and place. “The ease of handling allowed me to complete several fillings simultaneously, reducing chairside time,” she added. “GrandioSO 4U adapts easily to the tooth margins with minimal manipulation, making the restoration efficient and predictable.”
“The material is sculptable, easy to place, and very durable,” said Dr. Rishi Verma. Dr. Milo added, “It made building up the proximal wall very nice and easy.” Dr. Joel Preminger enjoyed the “super-easy placement and handling,” though 2 other evaluators felt the consistency was too sticky.
GrandioSO 4U is engineered with a very high radiopacity of 900% Al. Dr. Isaac House described it as “radiographically excellent; it looks great on X-rays, which will help in recall.” Dr. Zadeh also called the material “very radiopaque,” noting that on Class II post-treatment X-rays, it was “easy to confirm that the proper internal seal was gained.”
Time Savings—Depth of Cure and Simplified Shades
GrandioSO 4U’s simplified shade selection, short curing time, and 4-mm depth of cure save clinicians time while reducing the number of products needed for restorative treatment. Its 5 Cluster Shades cover all 16 classical VITA shades. That streamlines shade selection, improves shade-matching accuracy, and reduces inventory. “I am always looking for materials that make my life easier, and GrandioSO 4U helped by simplifying the shade-matching process,” shared Dr. Erica Anand.
Because GrandioSO 4U is very translucent before curing, it polymerizes quickly and reliably to depths of 4 mm without layering.
“It has a great depth of cure that makes it suitable for deeper lesions and larger preps,” said Dr. Sharif. “It allows me to place up to 4 mm of material in a single increment rather than placing it incrementally, which simplifies the restoration process and saves chair time.”
Dr. Zadeh found the material’s translucency made cleanup a bit difficult but considered it a worthwhile tradeoff: “On the same note, I understand that the translucency is what allows the cure to only be done in 10 seconds. I would take this payoff any day.”
Durability and Esthetics
A unique combination of nanoparticles and glass ceramics gives GrandioSO 4U a 91% filler content for long-term strength and durability.
The material’s translucency decreases during light curing, so the final shade blends naturally with surrounding teeth, while its low water absorption supports color stability.
“I really like its versatility and that it acts like an anterior flowable composite with stronger bulk-fill properties,” shared Dr. Anand. When restoring a mandibular molar with enamel hypoplasia, Dr. Sharif reported, “GrandioSO 4U adapted easily to the soft, discolored enamel and dentin, providing excellent adaptation and a very natural-looking restoration.”
Dr. Rory Sprouse was pleased with the final esthetics: “GrandioSO 4U blends with existing tooth structure, has great polishing results, and leaves a fantastic shine.” After restoring 2 laterals without much incisal translucency, he noted that “it blended with adjacent tooth structure fantastically.”
Overall Satisfaction
“GrandioSO 4U is a great product to add to the restorative repertoire,” shared Dr. Verma. Dr. Preminger reported “a great outcome on every patient I treated.” Dr. Sharif summed up her experience by saying, “Having a reliable material for treating deep carious lesions in young permanent teeth allows me to provide efficient, predictable treatment in a shorter amount of time.”
