New from Premier Dental, 2pro Total Access disposable prophy angles are designed with a unique dual-action cup and tip design that ensures complete access to all tooth surfaces. 2pro fits nose-cone straight handpieces and is available in 4 cup styles (soft/short, firm/short, soft/long, and firm/long) and a variety of colors.
Eleven hygienists and 3 dentists participated in the Dental Product Shopper evaluation of 2pro prophy angles. In addition to rating their overall satisfaction with the product, they rated and commented on features such as cup design, cup characteristics, ease of use, and ease of access.
Cup Design and Characteristics
After initial polishing of the tooth surfaces, the 2pro cup can be removed and the pointed tip used for optimal access to gingival and proximal areas, as well as around veneer margins, implants, orthodontic brackets, and bridges.
When the evaluators were asked about the convenience of 2pro?s dual-action cup and tip design, 8 rated it as excellent, 5 rated it as very good, and 1 rated it as fair, with 8 citing this as their favorite feature. Comments ranged from: ?allows more complete access to all tooth surfaces,? to ?excellent for cleaning under and around braces,? and ?I used the tip more than expected?an excellent feature.? One evaluator said the tips provided ?a speedy, comfortable, efficient way to clean off any excess blood after scaling. They worked perfectly.? A hygienist from California with 16 years of experience said, ?Instead of replacing the angle with a brush in ortho patients, 2pro gave me the same access without the extra step and time. It?s all right there and works great.?
Cup stability, size, shape, and flare were rated as excellent by 7 evaluators, as very good by 4, as good by 2, and as fair by 1. One evaluator found the cup ?too soft,? and another suggested ?webbing inside for better stain removal.? Two evaluators noted that they found the long cups to be too long. A hygienist with over 30 years of experience reported ?a nice feel when polishing and good flare? and another called cup flare ?great.?
Availability of 4 cup styles was rated as excellent by 10 evaluators, as very good by 1, and as good by 3. ?The variety is another way to tailor polishing to each patient?s needs, versus just varying prophy paste grits,? said 1 hygienist.
Ease of Use and Access
According to Premier, 2pro?s patented gearless design ensures quiet and smooth operation without vibration, and with near-zero freeze-ups. The manufacturer also describes the ergonomic 100-degree handle design as enabling comfortable, convenient access to lingual areas.
Five evaluators rated minimized noise and vibration as excellent, 7 rated it as very good, and 2 rated it as good, with comments including ?good torque, easy to use? and ?ran very smoothly and consistently with little vibration or noise.?
Ergonomics of the handle were rated as excellent by 3 evaluators, as very good by 3, as good by 7, and as poor by 1. One evaluator suggested improvements to ?minimize finger, arm, and wrist fatigue.? One hygienist cited 2pro?s light weight as her favorite feature.
Ease of access to lingual areas was rated as excellent by 2 evaluators, as very good by 7, as good by 4, and as poor by 1. One evaluator said ?the head angle made it more difficult to access lingual areas? and another ?wished the tip were a little more firm to access lingual grooves with a little more stability.?
Overall Satisfaction
Twelve evaluators said they would definitely or probably recommend 2pro and 10 would definitely or probably purchase it. Overall satisfaction was rated as excellent by 8 evaluators, as very good by 3, as good by 1, and as fair by 2. One evaluator called it ?an excellent product that I?ll continue to use,? another was ?very impressed and will definitely recommend that we purchase it,? and a third said ?its unique feature is time saving, and it provides greater polishing precision.? A Wisconsin hygienist who rated all features as excellent said, ?The vibrant colors made me feel good whenever I used it.? She went on to say, ?Its great flexibility and flare, the pointy tip, the variety of choices, gearless design, and 100-degree ergonomic handle were great.?
