For patients with dentures, discomfort and inconvenience unfortunately are often part of their daily routines, including frequent visits to the dentist for adjustments and relines. That’s especially true with immediate denture patients, who may need their temporary soft liners replaced during the healing process. Dentists—especially prosthodontists like Dr. Robert Mokbel—know all too well that follow-up appointments are inconvenient but a necessity for denture patients.

“Instead of using a temporary soft liner and replacing it a few times during healing of extraction sites, a long-term solution was needed,” explained Dr. Mokbel. Fortunately, he found that solution with DentuSil, a soft denture reline material from Keystone Industries that offers denture patients a comfortable, reliable reline in a single visit. DentuSil combines the ease of cartridge dispensing with the flexibility and resilience of a soft silicone reline material. The adhesive is specially formulated to hold the material in place, providing a secure reline in just minutes, with results that last for approximately 1 year and a shelf life of 2 years, according to Keystone.

Dr. Mokbel discovered that DentuSil “fits very well into his protocol,” calling it “simple to use and easy to apply, with very clear instructions.” He determined that this DPS Best Product, is “a comfortable alternative that reduces postoperative adjustment visits, helps with healing, and reduces discomfort after extractions.”

Ease of Use & Handling

Several evaluators commended DentuSil for being easy to use, including Dr. Hasan Khajah, a prosthodontist who said the “well-explained instruction manual made it convenient for both the patient and the clinician.” Nadim Baba, DMD, agreed that instructions, application, and cleanup, and Dr. Karen Stewart described DentuSil as a “simple, effective treatment with simple instructions.”

Irving Lebovics, DDS, said he likes the handling properties of DentuSil, and Dr. Mokbel said it provides “a smooth finish.” Dr. Mariano Polack suggested a “somewhat shorter setting time” but said he “liked the feel of the material after it set; it seemed slightly more rigid than another product I normally use but flexible enough for my patient’s needs.” Noting that DentuSil is “not too sticky, adheres well to the denture base, sets in about the right time, and is easy to trim,” Dr. Joseph Dautremont said, “The ease of use made me look good in front of the patients.”

Adhesion to Denture Base & Stability

Adhesion to Denture Base & Stability According to Dr. Baba, “The new generation of reline materials doesn’t, in general, bond to PMMA, often peeling off after a couple days, which becomes annoying to the patient, and is difficult to trim and adjust.” He likes the “excellent consistency” of DentuSil and said it “bonds very well to PMMA and was easy to trim.” Dr. Polack mentioned similar concerns about the durability of relines and “peeling off denture borders” and said DentuSil “seems more durable, bonded better to denture bases, and seems overall more resistant to wear, tear, and degradation.” Dr. Khajah said, “It adheres to the denture base and has a great working time.”

Although the dentists couldn’t comment on the long-term durability of the reline material in a short-term evaluation, Dr. Yatin Khanna said he observed no deterioration, and Dr. Ranu Mishra said, “It seems to be stable so far.” Hoping for “longevity in silicone relines,” Byron Davis, DDS, said that he was impressed with how well DentuSil “maintained its integrity and retained to denture bases, new or old.” Dr. Rex Baumgartner noted, “It works well to stabilize dentures during the healing period and is well tolerated by patients.”

Patient Comfort

For a lower immediate denture case, Dr. Mokbel used DentuSil as a soft liner during bone remodeling and healing while waiting for the permanent reline. “The patient was very comfortable, and I don’t think I have to replace it as often as my usual temporary soft liner until the final reline in 6 months,” he reported. He also called it “good for most patients with lower dentures, especially those with advanced bone loss and for elderly patients who can’t afford dental implants.” Stating that DentuSil helped a patient with a painful partial overdenture, Dr. Steven Spitz said, “The ease of use and ability to help a patient are key.” Dr. Khanna said patient comfort was his favorite feature, and Dr. Lebovics said it helped with tissue conditioning of a lower complete denture.

Overal Satisfaction

Overall Satisfaction DentuSil’s silicone base absorbs less water, making the reline more resistant to stains and odors, yet it’s easy to clean with a soft brush. A translucent pink color gives relines a natural, healthy appearance. Calling DentuSil “a solid, easy-to-use, wellmade, soft reliner for complete dentures,” Dr. Khajah said he would purchase the material in the future and recommend it to colleagues. Dr. Polack concluded, “DentuSil is a better reline material that does not tear or break apart, and decreases the number of patient visits.”
