TruColor™ Headlight Technology

TruColor™ is Orascoptic’s pioneering technology - the first high color rendering index (CRI) illumination in an LED loupe-mounted headlight. TruColor™ enables all Orascoptic headlights to render colors much closer to natural sunlight, unlocking a markedly higher level of color accuracy. Orascoptic research and development teams have achieved a color rendering index score greater than 90 across the full range of integrated headlights, yielding more vivid, truer colors. By comparison, all other loupe headlights exhibit CRI values in the low 70s at best. Natural sunlight scores at the maximum 100 in the CRI index.

TruColor Headlight Technology Evaluation

TruColor brings breakthrough color rendering to Orascoptic’s LED loupe-mounted headlights, revealing an unprecedented level of color accuracy

TruColor OrascopticDental professionals have access to more advanced materials and cutting-edge technologies than ever before—which makes it a little ironic when you need to kill the overhead light or move a patient toward the window to find some natural light. With a new state-of-the-art high-CRI illumination technology, however, you may never need to search for natural light again.

A breakthrough in loupe and headlight illumination from Orascoptic, TruColor technology features a vibrant color rendering index (CRI) that allows clinicians to view colors much closer to natural sunlight, unlocking a higher level of color accuracy without compromising light output, spot uniformity, or battery life.

“The TruColor technology seems to impart more natural light, which assists in shade matching,” said Teresa DeStefano, DMD, a DPS evaluator who compared her legacy Endeavour headlight with the new loupe-mounted Endeavour TruColor light. “I was able to successfully match several crowns to the natural shade without moving patients toward the window or shutting off my dental light,” she explained.

After testing the Endeavour TruColor headlight in their practices for several weeks, these dentists applauded the TruColor technology for its ability to improve their vision, display natural colors, and offer more accurate shade matching.

Color Accuracy

Compared to the CRI score of natural sunlight (maximum 100 CRI) and other loupe-mounted headlights that typically show a CRI in the 70s, TruColor technology demonstrates a CRI greater than 90 across Orascoptic’s full range of integrated loupe-mounted headlights. The result is truer, more vivid colors, which Dr. Abraham Jaskiel said was “helpful when looking at decay and discoloration.” He said TruColor emitted “a softer light to allow me to see colors without over-whitening.”

Hoping to improve “the tooth/restoration color distortion that occurs with normal headlights,” Joshua Conway, DDS, said, “TruColor’s high CRI gives a more true representation of tooth shade to aid in more accurate shade matching. I have more confidence in shade matching using this light.” Stating that TruColor has “better color matching and allows for more visibility,” Dr. Ravichandra Juluri said, “Orascoptic’s non-TruColor lights have adequate brightness and uniform light, but TruColor is superior in its ability to render light closer to natural light.” He explained that he can now leave the light on when taking clinical photos and gets “consistent clear pictures with natural color and no whiteout.” Peter Dantini, DDS, said, “I can see clearly, and the colors reflected are more natural,” and Dr. William Davidson commented, “When taking shades, it was much easier since the illumination didn’t change the shade. The TruColor light is helpful when evaluating soft-tissue health; seeing the true shade of the tissue improves diagnosis.”

Brightness

“The light has 3 brightness levels and doesn’t whiteout everything like a blue or white light,” shared Dr. Juluri. Dr. Ritu Dureja said TruColor was brighter than her original Endeavour light with a wider coverage area, but she would prefer a cordless light. Noting that she will “definitely use this light in the anterior when shade is important,” Dr. DeStefano suggested, ”If it was a tad brighter and still had TruColor technology, that would be appreciated.”

Citing the color, brightness, small size, and light weight as his favorite features, Dr. John Bush said the TruColor light has a high lumen rating, is in the warm Kelvin range, and is “a benefit for all procedures.” Explaining that his previous non-TruColor light was “very bright but harsh,” Peter Dantini, DDS, said, “The TruColor light is equally bright, but I can see clearly, and the colors reflected are more natural.” Dr. William Davidson commented, “When taking shades, it was much easier since the illumination didn’t change the shade.” He added, “The light is helpful when evaluating soft-tissue health; seeing the true shade of the tissue improves diagnosis.”

Attaching Light to Glasses/Loupes

The TruColor light “attached firmly to the loupes, didn’t move around, and once placed, didn’t need much adjustment,” shared Dr. DeStefano. “It fit well with the Orascoptic face shield, which is helpful during the pandemic.” Dr. Conway said, “The weight of the light is great. I like the universal frame attachment a lot; it is very stable.” Stating that he needs a better way to manage the power cord, Dr. Bush said TruColor “adapted easily to loupes, has a small battery with a long charge time, and has plugs on both ends of the power cord for ease of removing loupes without removing the battery.” Dr. Dantini would like to have the option of “headgear with flip-up loupes,” and Dr. Juluri suggested that “a laser insert or laser glasses” be included.

Overall Satisfaction

“We’re very familiar with previous Endeavor lights and have 3 systems,” said Dr. Davidson. “TruColor is the best light we have used to date.” Explaining that he has used Orascoptic loupes since the mid-1990’s, Dr. Bush said, “TruColor holds true to its good design and quality. All aspects of TruColor are a vast improvement over my previous light systems.”
