When you think about bonding to a tooth using a dental adhesive in self-etch mode, that dental adhesive has to be hydrophilic; it needs to have a lot of water content because that water will help ionize and achieve etching and bonding of tooth structure. However, when you light cure this hydrophilic adhesive layer, the water from within the dentin will penetrate and degrade it. The ideal adhesive should be hydrophilic in the beginning, but hydrophobic overall.
