Every dental practice owner is also a small business owner, and with that comes a litany of responsibilities—budgets to balance, inventory to manage, employees to supervise, and new patients to usher in the door—all while providing quality dental care to those already in the chair. Decisions to downsize the dental team, add or subtract treatment services, or switch suppliers to save some money are all par for the course.

Speaking of supplies, most practice owners rely on multiple dental manufacturers and distributors to provide the tools, materials, and equipment they need to power through the day. But sometimes, those small businesses need to make important decisions of their own.

Back to Basics

In July 2023, Whip Mix announced that it would be phasing out the reselling of its current portfolio of digital equipment in an effort to bring more focus to its core strength of manufacturing quality products, including gypsums, investments, articulators, and 3D printing resin additives.

“This was a difficult decision given the strong brands represented, the success of our efforts, and the relationships we have developed with these key digital equipment manufacturers,” said Anne Steinbock, Whip Mix CEO.

“Our restructuring effectively aligns our resources, strengths, and structure around our core digital and analog product lines. Since 1919, Whip Mix has continuously evolved to grow and provide innovative products and support to the dental laboratory, educational, and clinical market segments. Our actions build on that 100-year history and position the company for the future.”

Where It Started

That 100-year history began with the key to the company’s namesake, when 4 brothers introduced a groundbreaking casting  system to the dental marketplace that was essentially a refractory investment burnout oven, air pressure casting machine, and an egg-beater style spatula-tor that “whipped and mixed” better than anything else on the market.

Over the years, Whip Mix’s chemical line also grew, and many of its early mechanical products, such as its vacuum mixers, trimmers, and articulators, can still be seen in dental laboratories—a testament to their longevity and enduring design.

Today, Whip Mix maintains its corporate offices and manufacturing facilities, encompassing over 220,000 square feet, in Louisville, KY. Whip Mix West, in Fort Collins, CO, exclusively manufactures the Denar and Hanau lines of articulators and face bows. Additionally, Whip Mix maintains a distribution center in Dortmund, Germany, to fulfill orders across Europe.

3D Printer Resins

VeriSplint OS is the first FDA-cleared 3D printable hard splint material, which provides an efficient and economical way to achieve accurate, high-quality splints. Leveraging additive manufacturing and this rigid, durable resin, splints can be produced with a high level of efficiency and without several lengthy steps, which lower material costs. This also enhances digital design flexibility, which improves both the lab and the patient experience.

Whip Mix’s VeriModel resins include VeriModel OS Ivory, offering a high-quality surface finish and extreme precision for models. It can be used in any open-source 385- or 405-nm printer.

Highly stable with low shrinkage and long-lasting toughness, VeriModel OS Grey Resin provides great visual contrast to waxes and can be used to fabricate full-study models, ortho models, or models with removable dies.

Whip Mix’s VeriGuide is a Class I resin material developed to produce high precision surgical guides for use in dental implant surgery. VeriGuide OS has been successfully tested for biocompatibility and meets all mechanical properties requirements. The resin features an easy post-processing method and produces highly accurate surgical guides with a high-quality surface.

Articulators

The Denar Mark 300 Series articulators are engineered for superior performance and tested thoroughly based on proven methodology. They bring a new standard of interchangeability with factory-set accuracy within 20 microns. With their sleek, ergonomic design and powder-coated finish, these articulators have a contemporary look and are esthetically pleasing.

Gypsums

ResinRock is a resin-fortified die stone that produces high-quality models. The unique blend of synthetic resin and alpha gypsum results in improved surface smoothness and increased resistance to abrasion. Its low setting expansion and dimensional stability make it ideal for implant and complex restorative cases where precision and accuracy are required. ResinRock is easy to work with—its creamy, thixotropic mix pours well under vibration and stacks readily. It is scannable and comes in 7 colors: peach, blue, grey, ivory, white, green, and golden brown.
