MICHAEL A. SMITH, DMD

Dr. Smith graduated from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry and pursued extensive postgraduate education in occlusion, full-mouth rehabilitation, implants, TMJ disorders, sleep apnea, and conscious sedation. His private practice in Phoenix, AZ, is dedicated to esthetic and contemporary restorative dentistry, as well as TMJ disorders. Dr. Smith instructs other dentists nationally and internationally as a lecturer and mentor for various dental companies. He is cofounder and past director of the Arizona Community Dental Clinic in downtown Phoenix and founder of Biting Education, PLC. He also is a cofounder of the Clinical Mastery Education Series and is currently developing its research and advanced studies department.

Stable, hard, strong, smooth, and esthetic are just a few of the words Dr. Michael Smith uses to describe Kettenbach’s Visalys Temp, a multifunctional acrylic composite ideal for both long- and short-term temporaries. Here, he shares how using it in tandem with Visalys Fill and Visalys Flow unlocks the door to a seamless, time-saving way to create beautiful, healthy restorations and happier patients.

The last thing a dentist wants to do is to come in after hours to reseat a temporary that keeps coming off. It’s a hassle for the doctor and a sensitivity trap for the patient. The beauty of Visalys Temp is that it’s not a bis-acrylic material, it’s actually an acrylic composite, which means that it’s extremely hard and stable. When you load it and put it in place, it stays in place with minimal tooth movement, which means the patient won’t lose their temporary.

The other great thing is that because of its rigidity and flexural strength, it doesn’t flex on a tooth like a bis-acrylic material would. So, you don’t get micro-leakage under your temporary, which reduces any long-term sensitivity and simplifies cleanup. It’s just fantastic for long- or short-span temporaries.

Better Together

Now that Kettenbach launched its nanohybrid composite line—Visalys Fill and Visalys Flow—I can get a direct adhesion to the temporary material because the products have similar chemistries.

For example, if you're doing an esthetic temporary procedure and you want to add a different type of highlight to the material, you can add Visalys Flow inside your matrix. You can do this as a closed system with your matrix over the flow-able material, and then when you add Visalys Temp, you get a direct adhesion without needing to go back in and do an extra hybrid layer of a bond. It’s seamless. With a lot of other temporary materials, when we're doing an addition, we have to cut back the temporary material and then do our addition with a flowable or base composite material, which creates an extra step.

With the Visalys materials, you can actually do this as an all-in-one procedure. It saves tons of chair time, and then you also get the beauty of a wonderful esthetic composite as the temporary itself.

Polish Up for the Win

The Flex Shade System works very well for giving a chameleon effect to the tooth. The shades have different opacity layers to them, so you can adjust the composite to blend into the tooth area very well.

And, because of Visalys Temp's composite nature, it polishes up nicely, and that polishability is better for gum health. The higher the polish rate, the least amount of bacterial nature that’s going to adhere to the tooth or temporary because of porosities or a rough appearance. Ultimately, less plaque and bacteria accumulation add up to less sensitivity, happier gums, and a happier patient.
