But in today’s hectic operatories, managing a light so that it shines where it ought to shine and maintaining infection control whenever the light is touched can be a definite challenge. The newest addition to LumaDent’s line of award-winning headlights, waveLUX provides an edge-to-edge, circular brightness of 50,000 lux with hands-free operation that eliminates glove-changing and puts the lid on infection control. Universally compatible with all loupes, glasses, and shields, it’s also semi-wireless and lightweight, with a long battery life.
Superior Illumination
“Good visibility is key to identifying potential lesions,” shared Joy Ogami Avila, RDH, MS, who practices in Marina Del Rey, CA, and is a professor of health science at West Los Angeles College. “I teach oral pathology, so being able to see the tissue changes and discrepancies is very important, and good lighting is critical.”
While it features a convenient brightness adjustment knob and a manual on/off knob, waveLUX also includes an effortless, touch-free on/off operation that responds to a simple wave of the hand.
“I like the option of either waving the light on and off or using the actual physical button,” Avila said. “Hands-free certainly saves glove changes and is something I recommend to my students because they sometimes forget to follow infection control techniques.”

A semi-wireless design means that wires won't snag, hinder mobility, or disrupt patient treatments, and waveLUX uses a Panasonic lithium-ion battery cell that provides up to 12 hours of continuous uninterrupted use per charge. The 2 included batteries require just 2.5 hours of charging time. waveLUX weighs just 5 grams and features a magnet for easy attachment to uniforms.
“I appreciate being able to walk around corners and not worry about my light cord snagging,” Avila shared. “The main draw for me is the battery life. I can run it on high power and it easily gets me through the day,” she added.
