AeroPro Cordless Prophy System: Convenience, Comfort, and Safety
We recently spoke with Maryland hygienist Julia Tierney, RDH, BS, about why she enjoys using the AeroPro Cordless Prophy System from Premier
At Dr. Kent Jackson’s cosmetic and family dental practice in Cockeysville, MD, hygienist Julia Tierney uses Premier Dental’s AeroPro Cordless Prophy System to treat patients daily. In her career, she’s worked with several hygiene handpieces, but, thanks to a host of helpful features, AeroPro stands out from the crowd. For one, Tierney appreciates the choice AeroPro affords. “With other handpieces, you have to use a particular prophy angle, whereas with AeroPro, I like that I can use whichever kind I prefer,” she said, referencing AeroPro’s compatibility with most disposable prophy angle brands.
Of the convenience provided by AeroPro, Tierney also told DPS, “I love that I’m not attached to the chair, so I have a lot more mobility to work.” Unlike many handpieces, the cordless AeroPro is not tethered to the dental unit or controlled with a rheostat-driven foot pedal. This helps to avoid hand and wrist discomfort from cord drag and prevents foot, hip, and leg fatigue. The handpiece instead possesses a quiet yet powerful motor that delivers constant speed without having to apply extra pressure, maximizing both operator and patient comfort.
Aerosol and Splatter Reduction
AeroPro’s speed is controlled by a quick-touch button that allows the user to effortlessly switch on the fly. “The high-speed setting works great for most cases, but the lower speed is a nice option to have, especially for younger patients,” Tierney said. According to Premier, the low-speed setting is likewise effective at reducing aerosols and splatter—two of the primary crosscontamination hazards in dentistry.
AeroPro’s aerosol mitigation capabilities were recently proven via an in vitro study conducted at the University of California Irvine (UCI). This study demonstrated that, at both high and low speeds, AeroPro generated a lower volume and less spread of aerosol than other popular handpieces. The UCI study also revealed that aerosol reduction is even greater when AeroPro is coupled with high-volume evacuation (HVE), a duo that Tierney and her team have used to great effect during the COVID-19 pandemic. AeroPro is also CDC-compliant and features a convenient infection prevention protocol that enables easy disinfection and autoclave sterilization.
Battery Life and Ergonomics
In addition to enhancing infection control and overall ease of treatment, Tierney praised AeroPro’s ChargeSMART battery, which she noted “always lasts the full workday.” She also mentioned her affinity for the instrument’s ergonomics, which include a balanced, lightweight build, 360-degree prophy angle rotation, and a comfortable silicone grip. With regards to this design, Tierney says that she can “immediately feel the difference” compared to other hygiene handpieces. Seeing as non-specific, workrelated musculoskeletal disorders may affect over 90% of dental professionals— and with dental hygienists facing an increased risk of hand and wrist pain over dentists—choosing an ergonomic device like AeroPro can go a long way towards promoting hygienist health and ensuring career longevity.
The Premier Promise
Tierney said her experience as a Premier Dental customer has been nothing short of “awesome.” The Premier team has been instantly responsive to any inquiries and, when her office needed a replacement product, it arrived in less than a week. This is in keeping with the long-standing “Premier Promise”—a company-wide commitment to deliver a superior end-to-end customer experience, every day.
