Oral biofilm poses a constant challenge for both patients and the hygienists tasked with reducing and controlling it. But the struggle is amplified when dealing with residual biofilm buried deep in periodontal pockets, as hygienists must rely on a blind approach to effectively target both hard and soft deposits.

“The bacteria that inhabit periodontal pockets thrive and proliferate, resulting in active infections and inflammatory reactions that need treatment to disrupt the bacteria-harboring biofilm,” said Nicole Fortune, RDH, MBA, a dental speaker, mentor, and author with advanced knowledge in periodontics. "PerioDT helps break that destructive cycle by destroying the biofilm matrix and reducing inflammatory mediators that perpetuate the diseased state of the periodontal pocket—all while promoting natural healing in periodontal patients.”

Easy Application, Quick Results

Based on the simple, fast-acting principle of desiccation technology (DT), PerioDT is an advanced topical debridement solution that removes water from infectious microbial material, dead cellular debris, and other macromolecules found around the tooth and prosthetic surfaces in the oral cavity.

“PerioDT is indicated for 2 broad categories of patients: those with heavy calculus and those with gingival inflammation,” Fortune explained. “With PerioDT, hygienists can put less pressure and strain on their fingers and wrists to remove deposits, which creates a less assertive procedure for the patient.”

Available in both gel and liquid viscosities, PerioDT takes effect in less than a minute after contact with infectious materials. “For nonsurgical periodontal therapy, we recommend applying it twice—once at the beginning of the appointment and once at the end,” said Fortune, who is a clinical education manager at Young Specialties. “Studies suggest that after the first application, the bacteria are significantly reduced, and after the second, bacterial DNA is not detectable, as if it never even existed there.”

A Life-Changing Treatment

Fortune added that PerioDT is easy to integrate into regular hygiene care and encourages hygienists to start by treating a small, isolated area to see how it works before treating the entire mouth. “Make sure the area is completely dry, and remember—less is more,” she said. “You shouldn’t smear or overfill the treatment area with the liquid or gel, and it should be rinsed off after 10 to 30 seconds.”

Ultimately, PerioDT is a step forward for those suffering from periodontal disease. “Most of the time, periodontal patients understand that their disease is chronic, and that’s a burden for them,” Fortune said. “PerioDT offers a modern, minimally invasive solution that gives new hope to an age-old problem.”
