Jackie has been working at the Duca Dental practice since March 2011. After starting as a chairside dental assistant for Dr. Duca, she finished her dental hygiene education and became a registered dental hygienist. One of her main goals as a hygienist is creating a calming and warm atmosphere to make her patients as comfortable as possible.

Why I Use: Champ With Syringe Delivery

Bioactive, light-activated, pit and fissure sealant does not require a bonding agent

Long relied upon for effective caries prevention, Champ Pit and Fissure Sealant was previously limited to a brush delivery system. Now, Centrix is offering the renowned product with a syringe and delivery tip that is removable and replaceable for easy application and cleanup. Jackie Degroff, RDH, has found that, while both methods lead to successful outcomes, there are some undeniable benefits when it comes to the new syringe delivery.

An effective application method for any product is the key to a simpler experience for both patient and clinician. In my practice, we use Champ Pit and Fissure Sealant because it is a long-lasting product with many patient benefits. Previously, we used the single-dose LolliPack and Benda Brush applicator, and now the new syringe delivery. Both systems have been very effective. I do enjoy using the syringe's small delivery tip—even smaller than the application brush with the LolliPack. With this system, I'm able to get into the grooves a little bit easier because the cannulas are tinier.

Ideal Method for Pediatric Cases

The syringe delivery is significantly neater during application because I can control when the material dispenses with the plunger of the syringe. This delivery system is also very helpful with pediatric cases. The applicator brush is a little bulkier, which has its own benefits, but with a child, the tooth is smaller and a more precise delivery method is necessary.

The syringe method is a bit faster, which is important with children because you need to be quick in order to avoid saliva buildup and the discomfort of keeping their mouths open. It’s definitely kid-friendly.

There is easier access with the syringe no matter where you’re trying to apply the material, but it is especially convenient in the posterior. The tip is also reasonably flexible—you can bend it to the angle that you prefer, which helps you reach difficult places and is important for pediatric cases.

Long-Lasting Results

I love that, with Champ, no bonding agent is required. You don't have to have an assistant keep the mouth dry, which means less suction and it feels a lot tighter. Additionally, the lifespan of the sealant itself on the tooth seems to last longer than other brands, which typically can chip or fall off due to normal wear and tear. It lasts longer, which I can see with patients when they come in 6 months later. We use a lot of Centrix products and we’ve always been satisfied with the quality of the products as well as the quality of the service we’ve received. So, we were definitely interested in trying the new syringe delivery—and we were not disappointed.
