The Dental Hacks Podcast

“Media created by dentists, for dentists.” That’s the slogan of The Dental Hacks, a podcast hosted by Drs. Alan Mead and Jason Lipscomb that covers a diverse range of topics within the dental industry. The Dental Hacks Podcast also features The Dental Hacks Shorts, which consists of shorter episodes, and The Clinical Hacks Podcast, which emphasizes clinical stories and techniques. Below, Dr. Josh Howard reflects on a recent episode in which the hosts speak with Dr. Arun Garg about how COVID-19 has impacted the dental industry and how dentists should approach reopening their practices.

Clinician’s Take:

The Dental Hack Podcast CoverI was amazed to hear Dr. Garg talk about the rapid decline in passenger volume at every airport before the pandemic was declared. This progression of public fear seems to be when people began to realize how real this virus really is.

I do agree with the statement that today’s PPE requirements are not the forever PPE requirements. As more and more data emerge on the actual pathway of transmission, these recommendations will evolve. I absolutely love how the podcasters referred to all the different interpretations of PPE requirements and air filter/extraoral suction devices for each operatory as “PPE Theater.” With little actual research supporting what we should do to protect our team and patients, we do the best we can. And with that, positive patient perception is everything!

My personal feeling on this is that everyone in the office should have a mask on, even when 6 feet apart. We definitely lose something when patients can’t see the emotion on our faces during a case presentation. However, with tensions still so high, I think we need to show our patients how their safety is our No. 1 priority.
