Perhaps more than any other piece of dental equipment, dental handpieces experience significant wear and tear due to their frequent use and the demanding conditions of dental procedures. While regular maintenance, proper sterilization, and timely repairs can help extend the lifespan of a handpiece, there comes a time when it just doesn’t make sense to keep repairing your old trusty handpiece, and purchasing a new one is inevitable. But deciding to change to a new handpiece can present some challenges and perhaps cause a bit of trepidation. Many of your team members may have an affinity for their current handpieces. And even if your handpieces aren’t everything you’d like them to be, you’re familiar and comfortable with them.

When Dr. Jackson Bean’s “old handpieces were wearing out” and Dr. Chris Thorburn’s “electric hand-pieces were no longer holding burs, and the cost to repair was basically the same as the cost of buying new,” they selected Dentsply Sirona’s Midwest T1 Energo electric handpieces, and they are more than pleased with that decision.

Dr. Trushar Patel also chose the Midwest T1 Energo when he needed to upgrade to new handpieces for his growing practice. “Energo gave us more options for more effective cutting with consistent torque,” he said. “The heads are slightly smaller [than our previous handpieces] and definitely quieter.”

Ultimately, the switch to Midwest T1 Energo electric handpieces turned out to be a great move for these clinicians, who cited several reasons—including noise level, small head size, visibility, and improved torque compared to air-driven handpieces.*

Quiet Operation

The sounds in a dental office—especially those emitted by a handpiece—can trigger anxiety in many patients. Easing that anxiety relies on the compassion of the dental team as well as the effectiveness of the instruments they use. Searching for a quiet handpiece, Dr. Stephen Markham was impressed with the low noise level of the Midwest T1 Energo. Explaining that “patients prefer something quieter,” Dr. Patel discovered, “Because it works so well, we can complete procedures quickly.”

Easy Access, Improved Visibility

Faced with a challenge familiar to most dentists, “extension into the second and third molar areas with high speed,” Dr. Craig Milburn found that using the Midwest T1 Energo in his practice solved that challenge. “The small diameter and long neck of the new design improve my visibility and reach,” he said.

Dr. Milburn found the contra-angle hand-piece particularly helpful in “getting to the distal of second molars," thanks to its new design features, which include fiber-optic glass to enhance illumination and a small head size with increased bur protrusion.

Dr. Bean said the small head size helped him reach “posterior molars in patients with limited opening,” and Dr. Markham said, “The light works well.”

User Comfort and Efficiency

Handpiece ergonomics are key to user comfort and efficiency. In addition to taking steps to reduce the size of the Midwest T1 Energo handpiece's head for easy access and visibility, Dentsply Sirona improved the handpiece shape to enable precise work and make it easy to change burs.

Dr. Mark Jamison appreciates how quickly he can “switch between high-speed and low-speed attachments,” and Dr. Markham agreed that “changing speeds is quick with just a swipe instead of holding or pushing a button.

"The titanium body of the handpiece makes it lighter than stainless-steel, another benefit for busy clinicians. When looking for a small and light handpiece, Dr. Donna Grant found that the Midwest T1 Energo answered the call. In fact, she named size and weight as her favorite features.

In addition to its lightweight, ergonomic design, the Midwest T1 Energo handpiece features Safe Head Technology and a double-walled cap that protects against heat transfer during operation. Its optimized gear design increases the durability of the handpiece.

A Dependable Workhorse

Dr. Jamison said he made the switch to Midwest T1 Energo for 3 reasons: “to minimize noise, update fiber optics, and improve torque.” He declared, “It fulfilled all 3.” He went on to describe the Energo as “simple and dependable [with a] well-designed motor and attachments that provide confidence in all the procedures performed in our office.”

Eager to recommend the Midwest T1 Energo electric handpiece to his colleagues, Dr. Patel named its quiet operation and fiber optics as his favorite features, and Dr. Bean commented, “It’s got tons of torque.”

Thrilled with her decision to purchase the Midwest T1 Energo handpiece, Dr. Grant concluded, “I can’t practice without it.” As a clinician who purchases 15 electric handpieces a year, Dr. Milburn is hoping that his Midwest T1 Energo handpieces last for many years to come. "If so it will be a total game changer," he concluded.
