The upgraded Patterson Flowable Composite offers higher flexural and compressive strength, improved radiopacity, and versatile handling

Now that Patterson Dental has updated its flowable composite with higher flexural and compressive strength, Dr. David Fang has even more confidence when he needs to turn to the material in challenging cases.

The versatile composite “flows more easily, yet is steady and controlled,” said Dr. Fang, who practices in Salem, MA. There are no gaps where you lose control; you always feel guided. Its optimized filler blend enhances handling, while its thixotropic properties give clinicians control during application.

The improved radiopacity is another major advantage. “The increased radiopacity will give me more detail to the depth of the fill,” Dr. Fang said. “I have found some flowables on later radiographs almost suggest a void that I know is not there.”

Dr. Shalom Mehler, a dentist in Teaneck, NJ, values the composite’s high radiopacity, which allows him to clearly visualize margins on x-rays. He also noted its improved flow compared with the previous version and expects the material’s high flexural strength to support long-term success in posterior restorations.

Two Viscosities for Any Scenario

The composite is now offered in 2 viscosities—low and regular—expanding its versatility across a wider range of procedures. Dr. Mehler prefers the low-viscosity option for precise adaptation in small, narrow areas such as marginal ridges, while relying on the regular viscosity in posterior teeth where greater strength and sculptability are needed.

“I use the flowable as a base in some deep restorations,” Dr. Fang said. “The lighter viscosity flows and spreads easily, ensuring full coverage over some very uneven surfaces. The heavier viscosity works great in some deep interproximal preparations where I am trying to protect and cover the axial wall.”

Less Waste

The new composite comes in 2-g syringes vs 1 gram, which can reduce syringe waste and ensure the “material will always be fresh,” Dr. Fang said.

“The syringe delivery feels more manageable for smaller procedures,” Dr. Mehler said. “I wind up wasting less material and have better control over it.”

Color Stable and Esthetic

The updated composite offers enhanced color stability, making it ideal not only for small restorations but also for repairing provisionals and porcelain. Dr. Mehler observed that the shade matching is more consistent with this light-cured material compared to its predecessor, enhancing esthetic outcomes. Application is straightforward as well: just inject the flowable into the cavity preparation for ideal adaptation.

With the “improved flow properties and improved esthetics,” Dr. Mehler is confident the composite supports better clinical outcomes. “It’s very easy to work with,” Dr. Fang added. “I highly recommend it.”
