Longtime proponents of a digital workflow, this father and son duo has tried other scanners, but they prefer the speed, accuracy, and ease of use that comes with TRIOS

Several years ago, after making a large equipment purchase for his practice, Glen M. Goldstein, DMD, DICOI, got a firsthand look at the benefits afforded by an intraoral scanner, courtesy of a “freebie” offered to him as part of the deal—and the Randolph, NJ, clinician was hooked. He has since invested in the 3Shape TRIOS 3, and it’s remained a staple in the practice he shares with his son, Zachary Goldstein, DMD.

“I wanted a scanner that was an industry leader and top of the line,” Dr. Glen shared. “TRIOS 3 was so much faster than the original scanner we had, easier to use, and much more accurate. I also wanted to make sure it would be forward-compatible with new versions of software we relied on in our workflow, and the answer was ‘yes’ because 3Shape constantly upgrades its software. Even though we have another scanner, my son and I gravitate to the TRIOS.”

A Sleek Scanning Experience

Recently updated and now available in a sleek twilight titanium color, TRIOS 3 features a redesigned scanner button that’s easier to “press,” fewer cables, a smaller charging pod, and an LED indicator light that signals the unit is ready to begin scanning.

“Other scanners I have tried didn’t have the image quality of the TRIOS 3, and we had some challenges with our labs seeing the margins. The software was not as robust and not as intuitive,” Dr. Glen added.

Both clinicians use TRIOS 3 to facilitate much of their restorative work, especially crown and bridge, implant planning, implant bridges and crowns, diagnostic models, and partials. Plus, a variety of TRIOS patient engagement apps are available to boost patient communication and aid treatment acceptance, such as TRIOS Smile Design, which gives patients a photorealistic glimpse of their future smile.

'Top Piece of Technology'

The younger Dr. Goldstein said he finds tremendous benefits to practicing with his father. “He’s the best mentor, and it’s great to be able to bounce ideas off each other while we’re working.”

And when it comes to scanning with the TRIOS, Dr. Zachary loves being able to zoom in, trim, and edit the scan.

“If you take an analog impression, no matter how good it comes out, you’re not going to see detail in the same way you can with the TRIOS," Dr. Zachary explained. "The workflow is a lot more efficient. It’s the top piece of technology we have in our practice and patients are fascinated! They love seeing how it works.”
