Power, versatility, and intelligence. Those 3 words sum up the Gemini EVO diode laser from Ultradent. The latest evolution in laser dentistry builds upon its predecessor, Gemini, with increased power, user-friendly features, and Wi-Fi connectivity, along with the inclusion of photobiomodulation (PBM) adapters so users can take full advantage of laser technology for their patients.

Power and Precision

The Gemini EVO introduces a dramatic increase in energy with 100 watts of peak power, which enables faster cutting, less heat, and ultra-clean incisions in soft tissue. Delivered via foot pedal—with built-in haptic technology to provide a tactile indicator that the laser is fi ring—the super-pulsed power allows for a longer thermal relaxation period, which lets soft tissue cool better and reduces unwanted thermal damage.

“Of all the diode lasers, Gemini EVO cuts the smoothest of any of them, which means less postop sensitivity to the patient and faster healing,” said Ed Kusek, DDS, a dentist in Sioux Falls, SD, who described the power delivery as kinder to the tissue. “With some of the older lasers out there, as you push the pedal down, energy keeps coming out the whole time and it can cause necrosis of the tissue, which is painful for the patient. So, with the super-pulsed power, you’re giving the tissue enough time to rest in between pulses, but you’re getting high enough pulse rates, so it’s more efficient cutting.”

Greater Versatility

The Gemini EVO offers wavelengths of 810 and 980, which can be used individually or together, providing the versatility for a wide range of procedures. The 810 nm is used for optimal coagulation, and the 980 nm for optimal ablation, while the dual-wavelength mode is for the optimal combination. PBM procedures are made easy because the Gemini EVO laser presets the proper energy density for each of the 3 PBM adapters, minimizing any potential user error and providing the proper dosage to the patient based on the time selected. The user just chooses the appropriate tip for the treatment area, selects the treatment time, and lets the laser do the rest.

“It’s very user-friendly,” said Dr. Kusek, noting that PBM therapy helps the body heal and prevents pain. “We all want to avoid giving our patients narcotics for pain relief, and with photobiomodulation, you can curtail the amount of pain your patients are going to have postop.”

Easy-to-Use Technology

Featuring a streamlined display and user interface, the Gemini EVO is ready to use right away with 16 preprogrammed procedure settings—the presets are divided into 3 categories for efficient, intuitive use. The guided touch interface with voice confirmation helps to make the proper selection with ease.

The Wi-Fi-enabled laser allows for over-the-air software updates and dedicated tech support. Another advantage of the new laser is the Gemini EVO Dashboard, which allows users to view the number of procedures performed, track ROI, download procedure reports, monitor full usage statistics, and more.
