Heal, Seal, and Repair

Two unique materials offer enhanced biocompatibility during root canal treatment

Before bioceramic sealers came to market, dentists had 2 choices: resin-based materials or zinc oxide eugenol,” said Robert Salehrabi, DDS, a renowned endodontist who has lectured on advanced microscopic endodontics for nearly 2 decades. “While many dentists still use these materials, bioceramics offer the advantage of tricalcium silicate mineral as a key ingredient, which tends to be less toxic to tissues around the root and more biocompatible than previous sealers.”

One such material he turns to often is BioRoot Flow, a bioceramic root can l sealer dispensed via syringe, which offers excellent flow into accessory canals, tight adhesion to dentin and gutta-percha, and reproducible results in both simple and complex root canal treatments.

“BioRoot Flow is a good sealer to use for obturating canals with gutta-percha. It has a nice flow to it, and it can be used with warm or cold obturation techniques,” said Dr. Salehrabi. Additionally, it’s highly pure calcium silicate mineral formula eliminates shrinkage, limits bacterial growth, and increases biocompatibility and bioactivity.

Save the Root, Save the Tooth

Another material Dr. Salehrabi often reaches for is Biodentine XP. With indications for both crown and root, this all-in-one dentin substitute employs patented Active Biosilicate Technology to help preserve pulp vitality and form a tight seal within dentin tubules as well a dentinal bridge.

"One of the reasons I like using Septodont products is because the company has full control over the manufacturing process,” he said. “Their tricalcium silicate material is manufactured in-house, and as a result, the product quality is superb.” Thanks to its resin-free formula, Biodentine XP can be placed directly on the pulp.

“It's a great material for doing vital pulp therapy, perforation and resorption repair, and apical surgery. I’ve been using it for quite some time with excellent results,” he said, adding that it also avoids discoloration—an unwanted occurrence with traditional MTA materials—and comes in a convenient all-in-one powder-liquid cartridge.

“When you open a pack of MTA, you’re not going to use the entire material,” said Dr. Salehrabi. “So, most dentists will tightly seal it, put it in a drawer, and then forget about it for 2 or 3 months. When they open it up again, many times the material captures moisture from ambient air and becomes semi-set."

"With Biodentine, you just open 1 cartridge and the rest of the material in the box stays vacuum-sealed and untouched. You’re not wasting product or money. Plus, it doesn't stain and sets in just 12 minutes. These features, combined with proven biocompatibility, make Biodentine XP a truly great product."
