HyFlex EDM File System: Strength Meets Flexibility

Flexible, yet highly fracture resistant, Coltene’s HyFlex EDM file system offers built-in shape memory for superior mechanical preparation of the root canal and a more efficient endo workflow

Endodontics is a dental specialty that has seen exponential growth over the last decade. Keeping perfect pace with this industry growth means there is no shortage of endodontic instruments and materials, a situation that means many endodontists have to choose between a large selection of similar products. For Marcus Johnson, DDS, MSD, City Endodontics, New York, NY, it’s a simple decision to make.

“As an endodontic specialist, I manage challenging cases every day, and it’s nice to have a system like Coltene’s HyFlex EDM NiTi rotary endodontic file system to take the pressure off of me, while also allowing me to deliver high quality care to patients in need,” Dr. Johnson shared.

700% More Fracture Resistance

The HyFlex Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) file system offers up to 700% higher fracture resistance thanks to breakthrough technology that uses spark erosion to harden the surface of the NiTi file, reducing the risk of file separation and improving cutting efficiency.

“Performance is everything,” Dr. Johnson added. “I’ve used other files and it’s clear that the HyFlex EDM system outperforms those systems in my hands. I’m able to eliminate the guesswork, use less files, and if need be, I can even reuse those files and still achieve the same high quality optimal results,” he continued.

Controlled Memory for Effective Navigation

HyFlex EDM features controlled memory properties, which means the system follows the anatomy of the canal to significantly reduce the risk of ledging, transportation, and perforation.

“The system allows you to navigate challenging anatomy or intricate tributaries,” Dr. Johnson explained. “So, when we work within a space and we’re trying to clean and shape the canals, it’s important to be able to do this efficiently and effectively, while eliminating the patient’s pain and preventing a recurrence of that pain.”

File systems that are not effective at navigating canals can leave behind tissue and debris, which can lead to further complications. For Dr. Johnson, using a system that navigates complex anatomy and is both flexible and fracture resistant is critical. “With the HyFlex EDM file system, I’m very confident that I’m creating enough space for my irrigant to flow and I’m able to respect the natural anatomy of the tooth, which is really what we want when we’re trying to navigate these cases,” he explained.

Built-In Shape Memory and ROI

Since the system exhibits superior flexibility, fracture resistance, and cutting efficiency, clinicians will require fewer files for their procedure. Additionally, the built-in shape memory prevents stress during canal preparation by changing its spiral shape. A normal autoclave process can return the files to their original shape and fatigue resistance.

“There is a great return on investment aspect to this system,” Dr. Johnson pointed out. “Whenever we use files, we tend to just discard them after one use. With the HyFlex EDM file system, the shape is regained as you sterilize the instrument so you can get 2 or 3 times the usage out of a file system when normally you’d only get one use out of it.”

A Stress-Relieving Practice Builder

The HyFlex EDM file system is provided as a modular system of sterile instruments and includes the Shaping, Glidepath, OneFile, Orifice Opener, and Finishing files, which clinicians can use in combination with HyFlex CM files.

“I can definitely say that using these files has decreased my stress level, and it has also been a practice builder for me,” Dr. Johnson shared. “I can rely on it. It’s very durable. I understand that when I use it on cases with torturous anatomy or challenging curves, I can rest assured that I’ll be able to navigate these and not have to worry about a file separation, which is an uncomfortable conversation to have with a patient,” he continued. “I really enjoy the increased flexibility, resistance to fracture, superior canal tracking, and variable taper design—it allows us to have less stress as operators, therefore delivering better high-quality care to our patients.”
