A California periodontist shares how linking the Surgic Pro2 and VarioSurg 4 to a single wireless foot control streamlines his surgical workflow
For Sam Shamardi, DMD, design innovations that simplify complex procedures allow for a smoother surgical workflow. That's why at Shamardi Dental, his Newport Beach, CA, practice, he pairs NSK’s Surgic Pro2, a surgical micromotor, with the VarioSurg 4, an ultrasonic bone surgery system. Together, the 2 devices have become a staple during his implant treatment.
A Seamless Surgical Switch
The Surgic Pro2 and VarioSurg 4 devices feature a Bluetooth-enabled link function, eliminating cords and allowing Dr. Shamardi to toggle between the systems using a single foot control.
“Real estate in operatories is limited, and cords take up a lot of space,” he shared. “A cordless micromotor is very convenient because I can move it wherever I need to for access. A Bluetooth connection makes my surgical workflow more efficient.”
A periodontist for 2 decades, Dr. Shamardi said he often uses both devices during lateral sinus lifts with simultaneous implant placement.
“I use the VarioSurg 4 motor to create a sinus window and then switch to the Surgic Pro2 to do the drilling for the implant site prep and placement,” he shared. “Both instruments have intuitive LCD touch panels and are compact—they can rest on top of each other."
Surgic Pro2
Smaller and lighter than its predecessor, Surgic Pro2 features a center of gravity located closer to the head of the handpiece for precise operation and a more ergonomic touch. The micromotor also offers increased torque for added safety.
“Surgic Pro2 includes multiple programmable presets and can reach up to 80 Ncm,” he said. “Having that added torque can be a lifesaver for challenging clinical situations.”
VarioSurg 4
With a range of specialized tips and a lightweight, super-slim handpiece, VarioSurg 4 includes a Burst Mode with 3 frequency levels, delivering a “hammer” effect to hard, cortical bone.
“I use VarioSurg 4 for lateral sinus window creation and around the outline of very fine sinus membranes, and I'm confident that I won't create perforations,” Dr. Shamardi said. “For dense bone, the Burst Mode means I don’t have to stop and reconfigure my settings. It’s another example of the extra lengths NSK goes to when thinking about possible clinical situations we experience in our surgical workflows.”
