For patients with dentin hypersensitivity, D/Sense Crystal provides fast-acting and long-lasting relief in a single, time-saving step

With more than 3 decades of experience, JoAnn Pyne, RDH, knows that identifying the root cause of sensitivity is often half the battle. "The biggest challenge I encounter is understanding why the patient is having the hypersensitivity so I can help relieve or diminish their symptoms,” she explained. “I like to listen to the patient before I offer ways to help."

One of the ways Pyne offers help is by applying a desensitizer. So, when she had an opportunity to try Centrix’s D/Sense Crystal for a DPS product review, she happily agreed—and she's glad she did.

“We had a patient with gingival recession and sensitivity to extreme cold, which had increased by 1 mm on the buccal of the maxillary molar areas,” Pyne said. “D/Sense Crystal helped immediately, and we tested with cold water from our water cooler.”

How Does It Work?

A 1-step, dual-action desensitizer gel and cavity liner, D/Sense Crystal releases calcium oxalate and potassium nitrate crystals, which penetrate deeply to occlude the tubules and seal the dentin surface with a continuous, acid-resistant complex. This allows for fast desensitizing with deep, long-lasting crystal formation. Overall, Pyne found that her patients welcomed D/Sense Crystal application as a solution for managing their sensitivity issues.

“Another patient presented with hypersensitivity to cold following a crown placement, which had not settled down after about 6 months,” Pyne said. “Her occlusion was checked and no radiographic problems were detected, so I applied the D/Sense Crystal. When I followed up with her about a week later, she reported being happy with the reduced sensitivity to cold."

Easy to Apply, No Mess

Dispensed with a SofNeedle foam-tip for accurate placement and burnishing, D/Sense Crystal is indicated for noncarious cervical lesions; under crowns, bridges, and restorations; before/after tooth bleaching or prophylaxis; and on any exposed dentin surface, such as margins around temporary crowns.

“The product was easy to use, which made it desirable to administer at the patient’s hygiene appointment—there was no need to bring the patient back in,” Pyne said. “The SofNeedle tip was great for even application of the product with no dripping onto soft tissues."

Much-Needed Relief

After following up with patients who received a D/Sense Crystal application, Pyne noted that some had reduced sensitivity right away, while others noticed relief within a few days.

"It really helped with patients’ sensitivity during dental treatment," she said, adding that most importantly, “It worked!”
