Depending largely on age, the arrival of a milestone birthday is greeted with either joy and anticipation or dread and trepidation. But that’s the human race. In the case of products, especially those within the uber-competitive world of dentistry, a milestone birthday is always cause for celebration. And that’s why the “Big 4-0” birthday of Kettenbach’s premier impression material, Panasil, is such a momentous occasion.

Since its introduction in 1982, Panasil has steadfastly remained a leader in the impression materials category, owing to its high-viscosity, kneadable, addition curing formulation. A silicon-based material with a unique elasticity that ensures precise, crisp detail of even the deepest preparation margins, Panasil is also highly hydrophilic, a feature that allows accuracy no matter the amount of residual moisture.

“Panasil has led the industry with better tissue adaptation, even in a wet field of saliva and blood, and provides better detail and greater precision for lab-created restorations,” said Kettenbach General Manager Daniel Parrilli.

Highly Precise Impressions

Getting precise dental impressions has always been a challenge, whether it’s due to patients having deep margins or excessive gingival bleeding. But the 40-year longevity of Panasil impression material proves it continues to meet those challenges, even garnering a coveted DPS Best Product award from a team of clinicians. In fact, Panasil continues to be a “go to” for dentists, including those who have taken other aspects of their workflow to the digital level. “I’ve used Panasil for more than 10 years and I’ve found a consistently better product from our labs whenever I use it, because I am able to provide them with a superior impression,” explained Jason A. Wetmore, DMD, in Rockledge, FL. “Some of my associates have switched to scanning their preps, which also produces a wonderful product. Personally, I find it too time consuming, especially in a bloody field, and especially since it only takes 30 seconds for me to take a traditional impression using Panasil, and the results are always superior.”

Time is money, and Parrilli believes the hydrophilic properties of Panasil translate into a significant time savings—beneficial on both sides of the dental chair—as well as increased workflow efficiency.

“Placing material on tissue that is glistening rather than desiccated saves time and effort, and we’ve found that the consistent performance of Panasil greatly minimizes retakes,” Parrilli explained. Indicated for a variety of impression needs, Panasil mixes well, with less voids and bubbles. Its high tensile strength ensures precise impressions with no need to reline, and the material is easy to handle. It also provides a pleasant taste.

“Panasil has greater controlling thixotropy in a light body that stays where placed yet flows into the sulcus and crevices exceptionally well under pressure,” Parrilli explained.

Multiple Viscosities

Panasil displays high tensile strength and a remarkable resistance to permanent deformation. The versatile material is available in multiple viscosities of low, extra low, and medium, allowing it to meet a variety of indications and techniques. Additionally, Panasil has 2 set times—a feature Parrilli believes can enhance workflow efficiency and ensure consistent results.

“Panasil is extremely practice-friendly because dentists can efficiently place material with a long working time, yet the material also has a fast setting time,” he explained. In 2021, Kettenbach converted all its impression materials, including Panasil, to an innovative 50-mL cartridge system, resulting in up to 20% less residue left in the mixing tip compared to the previous application method. The convenient delivery system means it’s no longer necessary to “bleed” the material before application, resulting in less waste. In addition, the intuitive design and integrated positioning aid allow clinicians to quickly and easily attach the mixing tip to the cartridge. The design of the new cartridge delivery system also enables an environmentally friendly disposal of the product once used.

“When accuracy and efficiency are important, Panasil can be counted on to deliver consistent, predictable performance. And as a product that’s directly sold to dental practices, it’s also very affordably priced,” Parrilli added.
