Predicta Bioactive

Products in the growing Predicta Bioactive family are designed to make teeth healthier, such as this self-adhesive resin cement

Many dentists and dental product manufacturers have worked for years to prevent what had previously been described as unpreventable—microleakage. Consider that microleakage is defined as the “clinically undetectable passage of bacteria, fluids, molecules, or ions between a cavity wall and the restorative material.” How can that be prevented?

Luckily, the profession and the manufacturers that support it have not given up on the quest to solve this issue. Take, for example, Predicta Bioactive Cement, which Parkell designed specifically to fill and seal micro gaps while delivering beneficial ions to protect margins from penetration by the harsh elements found in the oral cavity.

David Fang, DMD, who’s been in practice for almost 45 years, was on the hunt for a cement with “thin viscosity, adequate working time, and solid curing” when he first tried Predicta Bioactive as part of a DPS product review.

“A thin viscosity permits the most intimate contact between the restoration and tooth structure to ensure that the seating, fit, and occlusion will be consistent with the restoration,” Dr. Fang explained. “The working time should allow a deliberate interval for mixing, isolating the working area, and placement without haste.”

Meeting Clinician Needs

Parkell’s formula for Predicta Bioactive Cement—which is self-adhesive, self-etching, and dual-curing—includes a viscosity that makes it easy to handle and clean up, a low film thickness to ensure a complete restoration seal, and a 1-minute working time for indirect restorations.

“The cement mixed very evenly and smoothly,” said Dr. Fang. “It handled great and was viscous without slumping. The working time was more than adequate, and once the restoration was seated in the mouth, it set up very quickly. The self-curing property worked very well.”

Predicta Bioactive Cement offers exceptional bond strength for a wide range of substrates without requiring additional primers. It contains MDP to ensure a strong bond to zirconia, is radiopaque, and available in 3 shades—Translucent, A2, and White Opaque.

Above and Beyond

Of course, what makes products in the Predicta Bioactive family really stand out from the pack is their continuous release and recharge of calcium, phosphate, and fluoride. By forming hydroxyapatite at the margin, the materials prevent microleakage, sensitivity, and potential secondary caries.

“I like the idea of having a material that will work to maintain a seal while remineralizing potentially weak areas,” said Dr. Fang. “I sometimes do ‘heroic’ crowns that have a guarded prognosis, such as pulp that’s been insulted due to deep caries involvement. The inherent materials will certainly help to provide the most positive prognosis.”
