ACTEON's family of Newtron piezoelectric power scalers offers the widest range of tips in the world, safe and precise scaling that preserves the tooth surface, a comfortable patient experience, and a host of ergonomic benefits for clinicians
2. Newtron Technology
Offering controlled linear vibrations, automatic and continuous frequency adjustment for safety and comfort, and a unique Color Coding System that intuitively associates each tip color ring with 1 of 4 power ranges, the Newtron provides unmatched precision, preserves enamel and tooth surfaces, and offers enhanced patient comfort.
“With the intuitive power setting, if I’m scaling at the power setting I’ve selected and suddenly encounter more difficult calculus, the Newtron will auto-adjust,” shared Husted. “It can be compared to the cruise control on a car, which automatically adjusts the speed as the car climbs a hill so you never lose power. I’m not constantly changing my settings when I have different levels of calculus throughout the mouth, because each tip has a color-coded band that matches to the color of the power setting which saves time.”
“Another advantage is that this piezoelectric scaler works by sweeping the calculus off the tooth without tapping or putting energy onto that delicate root surface,” she added. “So, it causes much less damage to the cementum or enamel of the tooth when we are attempting to remove biofilm or calculus. Because it’s a piezoelectric scaler, it generates less heat which means it requires less water, there’s less exposure to aerosols, and it’s more comfortable for the patient. With the Newtron, the power that’s being selected is appropriate to the color-coded band on the tip, not only making it easy but I never have to be concerned about putting too much energy into a tip that isn’t designed for it, which adds more safety.”
Ergonomics
Balanced and slim, and made of titanium for a lighter weight, the Newtron handpieces feature LED lighting (P5 B.LED and P5 B.LED XS only) for precise and accurate treatment, an ergonomic shape regardless of the grip position, and no perceptible vibration for ergonomic benefits to the clinician. In addition to a flexible cord on the handpiece, the elegant design of the device includes a flat glass surface, clean lines, and an illuminated power dial. An inclined front panel makes it easy to access the device settings and handpiece. Additionally, the Newtron features exclusive handpiece holders that are made of silicone and are installed on the front or side of the device for easy removal and autoclaving.
“The Newtron has ergonomic features that are really lovely,” said Husted. “One of the leading causes of fatigue for hygienists can be attributed to holding the handpiece very tightly. With the Newtron’s design—including the shape of the handpiece, which is wider than many magnetostrictive scalers—I find I have a very good grip even with wet gloves, and it requires very light pressure. Plus, there’s no vibrating mechanism to numb the tactile sensitivity in my fingers and hands. So, it allows me to hold the handpiece in an ergonomically comfortable position and really feel what I’m doing. The cord is also very light, which reduces drag.”

Husted treats more than 1,000 patients over the course of any given year, and finds herself reaching for the Newtron dozens of times each day for her hygiene treatments. “Dental hygiene is not just about cleaning calculus off teeth anymore,” added Husted. “Today, the trend is more focused on biofilm removal and flushing out the gums, and hygienic treatment that includes more of a therapeutic focus. In my opinion, the Newtron is a better choice for both patients and clinicians.”
