Stressful Endo Procedures? Try These NSK Handpieces
Two handpieces—one corded and one cordless—offer an ergonomic, lightweight solution that can simplify root canal procedures, boost workflow efficiency, and improve clinical success
A stress-free endo procedure is a true oxymoron because there simply is no such thing. But technology to the rescue! With leading-edge, well-performing instruments, the stresses and complications that affect the daily endo workflow can be eased, leading to more successful patient outcomes for even the most complicated cases.
For Richard Mounce, DDS, an endodontist in Eagle River, AK, the instrument of choice for safer and more efficient root canal procedures is the Endo-Mate TC2 and the Endo-Mate DT.
“I’ve used both of these models throughout my career for shaping canal systems with nickel titanium (NiTi) files in rotational movement,” Dr. Mounce said. “Each provides an economical yet highly reliable option to powering NiTi shaping instruments. Both models are easy to use and have a very short learning curve. Plus, the keypads and touch screen on both are very intuitive, which is not the case with some of the other motors on the market today. NSK quality is among the highest in the world.”
Endo-Mate DT
The Endo-Mate DT is an ultra-slim, compact handpiece that can memorize speed and torque settings for up to 9 NiTi files from all major suppliers. The motor automatically reacts when load reaches the preset level of torque. The small and portable handpiece has a push-type, ultra miniature head for enhanced visibility of treatment spots, and a quick-release system allows for easy head exchange.
“The Endo-Mate DT is a corded endodontic motor with very high functionality and it can run on a battery charge without being plugged in,” explained Dr. Mounce. “While the DT does have a cord, the kinking is minimal to almost nonexistent, which is different than other models where the handpiece cord kinks and must be constantly straightened. In the heat of the battle, this little benefit reduces stress and saves time,” he continued.
The Endo-Mate DT features 6 head angles, so clinicians can quickly adjust the angle to suit the treatment site, while micromotor operation is activated using a convenient on/off finger switch. There is also an optional foot control. The control panel is user-friendly and a liquid crystal display provides high visibility. The device can run for up to 5 hours on a single battery charge, or for up to 2 hours of continuous use.
“Each provides an economical yet highly reliable option to powering NiTi shaping instruments. NSK quality is among the highest in the world!”

Endo-Mate TC2
“I also use the Endo-Mate TC2, which is one of the first and most ‘proven’ cordless endo motor and handpieces on the market,” said Dr. Mounce. “Evolutions of this motor and its handpiece have been on the market for many years,” he continued.
Featuring a 90-minute quick charge with a non-contact type of charger, the cordless, lightweight, and ergonomically designed Endo-Mate TC2 features a mini head and slim neck for enhanced visibility and presets for speed, torque, gear ratio, and auto reverse mode. The machine can memorize speed and torque settings for up to 5 rotary NiTi files from all major suppliers. Endo-Mate TC2 has 2 alarm sounds for safer, more efficient procedures and a large LCD panel with an access-friendly key. All contra-angle heads are autoclavable up to 135ºC.
Compact, Space-Saving Design
Additionally, both the Endo-Mate DT and TC2 feature a compact design with a small footprint, which is a plus for today’s space-challenged workspaces. “These devices do not take up much room on the tabletop or tray space on the dental unit and provide all the power and safety required to shape root canal systems,” Dr. Mounce added. “I believe that utilizing these motors with the right clinical techniques and following the manufacturer’s recommended file settings for speed and torque will go a long way to reducing iatrogenic events, such as separated files, and can clearly improve clinical success.”
Overall, Dr. Mounce recommends the Endo-Mate DT or the Endo-Mate TC2 to other clinicians for 3 succinct reasons: “Both models are economical, lightweight, and ergonomic,” he said, “and both motors would be ideal for shaping relatively open canals. Severely curved and calcified canals could be treated using these motors, and given the rotational speeds and torque limits built into the systems, these are very safe and reliable, especially for general dentists doing 1 to 5 endodontic procedures a week,” he added.
