Super Fiber Post Offers Many Reasons to Boast
When it comes to restorative dentistry, one aspect that has greatly improved for clinicians—in terms of both materials and techniques—is the post and crown that follows endodontic therapy. Traditionally, either a metallic prefabricated post or cast post was placed before a full- or partial-coverage crown. Thankfully, we can now use fiber posts that fit the anatomy of a canal and mimic the flexural strength of tooth structure. Discovered during a recent DPS product review, the iLumi Super Fiber Post is one such post that I have truly enjoyed using in my cases.
Treatment Begins with Endo
In this case, a 26-year-old woman presented with an upper premolar needing endo, post, and crown— with tooth No. 4 needing a root canal due to deep decay and a necrotic pulp (Figure 1).
Rotary endodontics for 2 separate canals was initially completed and remaining decay removed (Figure 2).
Using the smallest of the iLumi Fiber Post drills, space was prepared in the palatal canal to an appropriate depth as determined by the drill. The post was then tried in and fit was verified (Figure 3). Next, I cleaned the post with ethyl alcohol, dried it, placed and air-thinned a bonding agent in the post space, and then coated the post with resin cement before placement (Figure 4). The post was rotated slightly to ensure even coating of the cement in the canal, and then light cured. The remainder of the core was filled with flowable resin (Figure 5).
For the next phase of treatment, the tooth was prepared and scanned for a full-coverage crown, which was milled in-office (Figures 6–8).
A ceramic/composite hybrid crown was constructed and cemented using traditional methods. Bite and contacts were then verified (Figure 9).
A postop radiograph was taken (Figure 10) and the patient was happy with the result (Figure 11).
A Well-Organized System
This case was a complete success from start to finish! It was a fun case, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to provide this patient with an excellent outcome.
I truly enjoy the simplicity of the iLumi Super Fiber Post system. The kit is very well organized and easy to understand. The post space drills and Super Fiber Posts are clearly color coded, fit very well, and are radiopaque enough to visualize and define on radio graphs. Going forward, I will definitely be using the Super Fiber Post system on any case that requires a post and core procedure. |
