Surgic Pro: Take It for a Spin
NSK’s surgical micromotor offers versatility, whisper-quiet operation, and a smooth ride
Dr. Sam Shamardi, a periodontist who practices in Boston, MA, keeps an eye out for instruments and technology that will enhance the care he provides and help his practice run smoothly. That keen eye led him to NSK’s Surgic Pro micromotor. “I’m always looking for better instrumentation that will make procedures run more smoothly,” Dr. Shamardi explained. “I was told about Surgic Pro after being introduced to the company, and after learning more about it, I felt it was worth giving a shot.”
That initial decision to try the micromotor resulted in an instant link. “I’ve worked with many different motors over the 15 years I’ve been practicing, but I found a lot of connection with this one and really loved it and wanted to continue with it,” said Dr. Shamardi, who teaches part-time at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine Division of Periodontics. Specifically, Dr. Shamardi appreciates Surgic Pro’s smooth operation and versatility. He also values NSK’s commitment to quality and customer service.
“It’s almost like you’re driving a car that’s just a little bit more luxurious. The drive is better, and that’s how I feel about this motor.”

Luxury in a Micromotor
Most clinicians can attest to the noise generated by handpiece motors. They encounter it every day. That’s why Surgic Pro’s smooth operation attracted Dr. Shamardi. “You can feel that in the patient’s mouth while you’re using it,” he said. “The way the water flows, the actual drilling—it’s just a very smooth motor with a lot less chatter than other motors. It’s almost like you’re driving a car that’s just a little bit more luxurious. The drive is better, and that’s how I feel about this motor.”
Compared to conventional optic surgical micromotors, Surgic Pro is 16.2 mm shorter and weighs 42 grams less. The motor also offers user-friendly foot control that allows clinicians to operate all functions within the preset parameters without touching the control panel. This functionality prevents users from inadvertently activating the micromotor outside of the preset limits.
Versatility Breeds Efficiency
Dr. Shamardi especially appreciates that Surgic Pro can be used for both surgical and implant procedures. “It’s a multi-use motor, and not all are,” he said. “That multi-use is beneficial and can save you from needing an extra instrument.”
The handpiece’s 8 programs can be customized to accommodate specific clinician and procedure needs. “You can customize based on bone density, speed setting, torque setting…you can preset all of them,” said Dr. Shamardi. “You also can preset for implant or surgical use, which allows you to go back and forth without adjusting settings.”
Your Reputation Precedes You
“I’m really comfortable saying that NSK is one of the best companies I’ve worked with,” said Dr. Shamardi. “They’re extremely responsive, which is very uncommon, and their customer support is phenomenal.”
Dr. Shamardi also respects NSK’s commitment to quality. “They’re a company that literally makes everything by hand,” he explained. “They have actual people doing it rather than machines, and that’s where you see the quality difference.”
He also shared that NSK continues to work on new developments to enhance current instruments and introduce others. He’s worked with the manufacturer to provide feedback and appreciates that the company isn’t just coasting on its recent successes. “To see them looking to continue to make improvements speaks to what they’re doing.”
